APEX Insight: Content service provider Stellar Entertainment will launch a new in-flight entertainment product called pixL at this year’s APEX EXPO. In addition to providing information like airline release date and availability and handling catalog management and budgets, the web app includes a data analytics portal that informs programming and purchasing decisions.

Content service provider Stellar Entertainment announced yesterday that it will launch a new in-flight entertainment product called pixL at this year’s APEX EXPO, taking place in Singapore from October 24 to 27.

The web app features millions of film, television and music listings, including language and subtitle options, trailers, reviews, airline release date (rather than theatrical release date) and availability information from major Hollywood labs. It also handles purchase orders, music streaming, catalog management, preview screening and budgets.

“With pixL, an airline has choice and control over its content in a way that has never been possible before.” €” Rob Lynch, The Stellar Group

“PixL is unique to Stellar and is a big leap forward in the monthly content shortlisting and management process of our industry,” said Rob Lynch, chairman of Sydney-based The Stellar Group. “With pixL, an airline has choice and control over its content in a way that has never been possible before.”

According to Joel Joslin, manager for New Business, R&D, at Stellar Entertainment, pixL is an industry first. “We’re confident that pixL is the first of its kind to cover all studios, all encoding labs and all major avionics entertainment systems and their accompanying metadata requirements,” he told APEX Media.

One of pixL’s main selling points is its analytics portal, which allows airlines to explore data on passenger usage of IFE systems across their fleet in order to make informed programming and purchasing decisions. The metrics offer insight into questions like: “Was the movie’s performance with passengers good value against its overall cost to the airline?” and “Is a new release film expensive or cheap considering its performance in cinemas around the world?”

“We want our partners to set aggressive KPIs, and meet them every time.” €” Joel Joslin, Stellar Entertainment

“The world has moved to relying on big data,” says Joslin. ” The IFE industry has struggled to move as quickly, weighed down a little, understandably, by legacy equipment … We want our partners to set aggressive KPIs (key performance indicators), and meet them every time.”
