APEX Insight: Data collected by dating app Happn shows the top 10 American airports where romantic connections are most likely to happen.

With the holidays approaching, travelers are preparing to reenact the opening scene of Love Actually as they reunite with family and friends at the airport. Some may even experience grand romantic gestures, like in the scene where 12-year-old Sam dodges security at Heathrow Airport in a heroic, yet risky, attempt to reach his crush before she boards a flight home for the holidays. Dating app Happn wants to beat potential lovers to the chase by connecting companion-seeking strangers passing through airports this holiday season.

Data collected by Happn indicates that app users are most likely to connect at John F. Kennedy, San Francisco and McCarran international airports. “With so much hustle and bustle happening at the airport during the holiday season, we feel there are some really great opportunities to find meaningful connections – or even romance – while traveling,” shares Happn’s CEO and founder, Didier Rappaport. “Because of the unique way Happn works, your next serendipitous encounter could be right around the corner – over a pre-flight cocktail and appetizers at the airport bar, while in line at the gift shop or even in the lounge.”

The Happn app uses real-time geo-location technology to connect users within 800 feet of one another, showing a timeline of the potential mates users are crossing paths with throughout the day. If interested, users can “heart” other users and, if interest is mutual, begin messaging each other. The app has more than 23 million users around the world with over 13 percent based in the United States.

“During the holiday season, there’s something special in the air. It’s a time for joy and love, and some might even say magic,” says Rappaport. “Who hasn’t dreamt about the opportunity for a spontaneous love connection? The idea that your soul mate could be in line at the gift shop or around the corner at the café – or even seated next to you on the plane? That’s when the real magic can happen.”
