Panasonic Under US Fed Investigation; CEO Replaced

Panasonic Avionics is under investigation by US authorities over allegations that it has broken bribery and securities laws. The US Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission are probing whether the company violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. A statement by the Osaka-based company’s in-flight entertainment and communications systems subsidiary said that it is cooperating with the agencies, and evaluating the potential financial impact of the probe. In a separate piece of news, Panasonic Avionics announced a senior management change, with Hideo Nakano being appointed CEO with immediate effect, replacing Paul Margis who has left the company. Nakano was, until now, deputy CEO of Panasonic Avionics.

American Airlines Opens Cuba Office Despite Trump Uncertainty

American Airlines has opened an office in Havana despite uncertainty over what Donald Trump’s presidency will mean for relations between the US and Cuba. The opening of the office comes just two months after the airline completed its first commercial flight from the US to Havana in more than 50 years. “We cannot speculate about what [Trump's] next step will be, but I can assure you that we are moving our machine forward,” said Galo Beltran, American Airlines’ country manager, Cuba. “You are a witness to the investment and how important Cuba is to American as a US entity doing business.”

Downsize Me: Spirit Airlines’ Bare Fare Shrinks Hand Luggage Allowance by One Quarter

Spirit Airlines has downsized the dimensions of personal items that passengers can bring on board for free. The low-cost carrier will introduce a new Bare Fare ticket on April 4, reducing the size of hand luggage by a quarter to 18 x 14 x 8 inches. Passengers can pay an additional $26 when booking their flight to take a larger item of hand luggage; otherwise Spirit Airlines will impose a $100 fee for passengers with baggage that exceeds the new dimensions. The move follows announcements of basic economy fares barring use of overhead space made by both American Airlines and United Airlines.

Airport Spas Add a Touch of Hush to the Travel Rush

As airports improve the passenger experience and travelers get used to spending more time – and money – in terminals, the demand for airport spas is growing. Terminal Getaway Spa currently has five locations at Chicago O’Hare, Charlotte Douglas and Orlando international airports, with four more set to open at Seattle-Tacoma and Tampa international airports this year. Meanwhile XpresSpa, which opened its first airport location in 2004, now has more than 50 branches in over 20 airports worldwide. Services offered at airport spas range from nail care to oxygen therapy, but at XpresSpa and Terminal Getaway Spa foot and chair massages top the list of most requested treatments.
