British Airways Adds Club Europe Service to UK Domestic Flights

British Airways confirmed it will introduce a business-class service on domestic UK flights for the first time. As of April 1, the flag carrier will extend its Club Europe service to flights within the UK, initially on services between London and five cities: Manchester, Belfast, Glasgow, Inverness and Edinburgh. The Club Europe service provides complimentary food and drinks to passengers, but uses the same seats as the rest of the Airbus A320 cabin and no additional legroom. However, the middle seat in the rows of three is blocked off to give business passengers more elbow room.

Airborne Wireless Network Signs MoU for Laser-Based In-Flight Connectivity

Airborne Wireless Network has signed a memorandum of understanding with ViaLight to explore the possibility of integrating a laser-based communications system with its planned Infinitus Super Highway in-flight broadband network. ViaLight said its laser technology delivers ultra-high data rate communication across vast distances. “Once developed, our hybrid system, combined with traditional radio-links with laser, could deliver an extreme-capacity airborne backbone that would offer unprecedented bandwidth at a reasonable cost,” said Jason T. de Mos, Airborne Wireless Network’s VP of Business Development and Aviation Compliance.

DXB Claims to Have Launched World’s Fastest Airport Wi-Fi

Dubai Airports has upgraded the Wi-Fi service across its terminals at Al Maktoum International and Dubai International airports (DXB), offering speeds of up to 100 Mbps. Named WOW-Fi, the operating company of both airports says the new service is faster than that of any airport in the world. More than 6,000 upgraded Wi-Fi access points are being installed across DXB’s terminal buildings to ensure full wireless coverage. “With WOW-Fi, passengers will get a speed of up to 100 Mbps to enable them to quickly download or upload emails, pictures, videos and social media updates,” said Michael Ibbitson, EVP of Technology and Infrastructure at Dubai Airports.

Blizzard Forces Airline Cancellations Across US East Coast

A severe snowstorm making its way across the US East Coast has forced airlines to cancel more than 8,000 flights since Sunday. Winter Storm Stella has placed nearly 19 million people under a blizzard warning with up to 18 inches of snow falling in places. Nearly all flights today were canceled at the big three airports serving New York City: JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty. Similar problems affected Baltimore and Boston, with most of the flights canceled before the beginning of the day. Philadelphia, Washington Dulles and Washington Reagan National are also experiencing disruptions, with between 30 and 50 percent of flights preemptively canceled, according to FlightAware.

Two US Carriers to Axe Flights to Cuba

Frontier Airlines and Silver Airways announced yesterday they will halt flights from the US to Cuba, citing weak demand. Florida-based Silver flies to nine Cuban destinations from Fort Lauderdale, but will stop these services as of April 22, while Denver-based Frontier will suspend its Miami-Havana service on June 4. “It is not in the best interest of Silver and its team members to behave in the same irrational manner as other airlines,” Silver Airlines spokesperson Misty Pinson says. “However, Silver will continue to monitor Cuba routes and will consider resuming service in the future if the commercial environment changes.”

Birmingham Airport Installs Wait-Time Tracking Technology

Birmingham Airport in the UK has installed technology to track waiting times for passengers arriving in the North Terminal immigration hall. The BlipTrack queue management technology, which is used by more than 25 airports worldwide, is based on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi sensors that detect travelers’ mobile devices, allowing the airport to collect information based on movement patterns. Birmingham Airport says the information is posted on screens to help “reduce passenger frustration by creating realistic wait time expectations.” The airport has plans to extend BlipTrack to other areas, such as the South Terminal security and immigration halls.
