Crystal Cabin Award 2018 Shortlist Announced

    APEX Insight: The shortlist has been announced for the 12th annual Crystal Cabin Award, which recognizes innovations in aircraft cabin design across eight categories. A 28-member jury will determine the finalists, and the winners will be awarded during the Aircraft Interiors Expo in April.

    Tomorrow’s announcement of the nominations for the past year’s greatest cinematic achievements is preceded by today’s release of the shortlist for what many call the Oscars of the aircraft interiors industry. The Crystal Cabin Award recognizes innovations in aircraft cabin design by aircraft manufacturers, airlines, suppliers, engineering firms and universities.

    With 91 applicants from 18 countries on this year’s shortlist, the Crystal Cabin Award has reached a new record in its twelfth year. Highlights on this year’s shortlist include Singapore Airlines’ new A380 first-class suites, Qatar Aiwarys’ business-class QSuite, Airbus’ A320neo Airspace Cabin, Haeco’s noise-absorbing headrest, VR glasses and a 3D monitor for in-flight entertainment.

    The companies on the shortlist will compete for the top position the following categories:

    1. Cabin Concepts

    2. Cabin Systems
    Previous winner (2017): Power Line Communication (PLC) for Aircrafts – Diehl Aerosystems (cooperation partner: Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts)

    3. Electronic Systems
    Previoius winner (2017): Airtime Portal – Global Eagle Entertainment

    4. Greener Cabin, Health, Safety and Environment
    Previous winner (2017): ReTrolley – Airbus (cooperation partner: Airbus Corporate Innovation)

    5. Material and Components
    Previous winner (2017): Octaspring Lightweight Seat Cushion – Studio Moderna BI/Boxmark d.o.o (cooperation partners: Airbus and Stelia

    6. Passenger Comfort Hardware
    Previous winner (2017): Smart Cabin Reconfiguration – Airbus (cooperation partner: Recaro Aircraft Seating)

    7. University
    Previous winner (2017): Smart Onboard Wheelchair (Smart OBW) – HAW Hamburg: Rueckbrodt, Reimer & Waldheuer (cooperation partner: Airbus Hamburg – ProtoSpace)

    8. Visionary Concepts
    Previous winner (2017): n/a

    An international jury made up of 28 representatives from airlines, aircraft manufacturers, suppliers, universities and the press will decide which of the shortlisted concepts make it into the final round. The Crystal Cabin Award winners will be announced at a ceremony at Hamburg’s Hotel Atlantic Kempinski on April 10, during the Aircraft Interiors Expo.
