Aircraft Carrying Brazilian Soccer Team Crashes in Colombia, Killing 75

A chartered aircraft carrying members of Brazil’s Chapecoense soccer team crashed close to Medellín, Colombia, in the early hours of Tuesday morning. At least 75 people including players, journalists and crew members are confirmed dead. Colombia’s civil aviation authority said six people initially survived the crash, but one died a short time later. The aircraft, a British Aerospace 146, was flying the team from São Paulo – stopping briefly in Bolivia – to Chapecoense’s Copa Sudamericana finals match against Atlético Nacional in Colombia’s second-largest city. A statement released by José María Córdova International Airport said the aircraft declared an emergency because of electrical failures, before crashing in the mountains outside the city.

US Airlines Launch Havana Flights Despite Trump Rumblings

Commercial flights between the US and Havana, Cuba, resumed yesterday, after American Airlines and JetBlue launched the first routes to the nation’s capital in 55 years. The new services come as president-elect Donald Trump tweeted on Monday that he will "terminate the deal" between Cuba and the US if the island’s communist administration does not make a better agreement. "While we can't speculate, we are full steam ahead to begin service to Havana this week," said American Airlines spokesperson Matt Miller. JetBlue has not commented on Trump’s remarks about the normalization of relations between the two countries.

Airborne Wireless Network Receives Its First STC for Infinitus Super Highway

Airborne Wireless Network has received a supplemental type certificate (STC) from the US Federal Aviation Administration to equip a broadband transceiver system on board a Boeing 757-200. The STC represents a significant development in the company’s plan to create its high-speed broadband airborne wireless network, the Infinitus Super Highway. The company will now file for multiple STCs for use on aircraft including the Boeing 737, Boeing 787 and Airbus A320/21. Once finalized, the transceiver system will be used to form a meshed digital connectivity network between aircraft in the sky.

SITAONAIR Partners With Aireon and FlightAware for ADS-B Aircraft Tracking

SITAONAIR has announced a partnership with Aireon and FlightAware to supply its airline customers with space-based automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) data. The deal means SITAONAIR’s AIRCOM FlightTracker will be able to offer airlines 100-percent real-time global flight-tracking data as of 2018. “The addition of Aireon’s space-based ADS-B data … will allow us to help airlines achieve truly global flight tracking in a cost-effective way, by making use of the preexisting ADS-B capability on aircraft of all shapes and sizes,” says Paul Gibson, AIRCOM portfolio director at SITAONAIR.

British Airways Launches a Facebook Messenger Bot

British Airways has launched a Facebook messenger bot that offers travelers flying to London a personal guide to the capital. BA says the Facebook “BOTler” service is initially available for customers in Germany, France, India, Singapore, Japan and the UAE, and offers live updates, personalized recommendations and exclusive deals on accommodation and shopping in the UK capital. “We are continually reviewing the ways in which we engage with our loyal customers; that includes providing them with added value before they even fly with us,” says Sara Dunham, BA’s head of Marketing Retail and Direct Channels.

Delta Hands Lifelong Ban to Passenger for Disruptive Post-Election Rant

Delta Air Lines has given a lifetime ban to a passenger who unleashed an election rant on a flight from Atlanta to Allentown, Pennsylvania, prior to takeoff on November 22. In a video recorded by another passenger, the man is shown standing in the aisle yelling and insulting Hillary Clinton supporters. Delta faced criticism on social media for allowing the passenger to stay on the flight despite being initially removed. “If our colleagues had witnessed firsthand what was shown in the video, there is no question they would have removed him from the aircraft. He will never again be allowed on a Delta plane,” said CEO Ed Bastian in a statement.

Airlines Step Into the Shoe World With Futuristic Footwear

Airlines are gaining ground in the fashion world with futuristic footwear. EasyJet’s Sneakairs with Google Maps integration make exploring new cities easier, while Virgin America’s First Class Shoe shows off the airline’s premium amenities, including a functional Wi-Fi hotspot, LED mood lighting and a video screen. “We really wanted to give people the chance to experience what it’s like to fly Virgin’s first-class cabin with both feet still on the ground,” said Mike McKay, chief creative officer at Eleven, Inc., the agency that designed the shoe.
