Finnair to Become World’s First Airline to Accept In-Flight Alipay Transactions

Finnair says it plans to become the world’s first airline to accept in-flight payments made using Alipay as of next month. The airline has partnered with Finland-based e-payment platform ePassi to offer the solution on Airbus A350 flights between Shanghai and Helsinki for an initial trial basis. Finnair’s lounge in the non-Schengen area at Helsinki Airport will also accept Alipay, which is reportedly used by 60 percent of Chinese people traveling abroad. “As the number of travelers grows between Asia and Northern Europe, the need for a familiar and convenient payment platform has never been greater,” said Katri Harra-Salonen, Finnair's Chief Digital Officer.

Canada Updates Airport Screening Rules for Transgender Travelers

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) says it has changed its security screening procedures at the country’s airports to increase sensitivity to and privacy for transgender travelers. The new measures allow trans passengers to indicate whether they’d prefer to be searched by a male or female officer, or they can request a "split search," where a female officer searches one half of the body and a male officer searches the other half. Transgender travelers can also request that a screening be performed in a private area. Jeremy Dias, director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, described the new policy as "an amazing first step," but said it must be backed up with adequate training for CATSA staff.
