Boeing Rolls Out 787-10 at South Carolina Assembly Plant

Boeing rolled out its first 787-10, the third and largest Dreamliner variant, on Friday at its assembly plant in North Charleston, South Carolina, in a ceremony led by Donald Trump. The US president, who was joined by Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing's president and CEO; Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplanes' president and CEO; and Henry McMaster, Governor of South Carolina; said, “Our goal as a nation must be to rely less on imports and more on products made right here in the USA … We are here today to celebrate American engineering and American manufacturing.” However, the 787’s wings, tail and sections of its fuselage are built in Italy and Japan, while other components such as the wiring are produced in Mexico.

Ryanair Files for Legal Action Against Expedia

Ryanair has filed legal papers against Expedia, alleging that the online booking website is illegally using and promoting the airline’s fares through “screen-scraping” practices. The low-cost carrier hasn’t commented on the impending action, but is expected to follow a similar course as that taken against eDreams Odigeo and Google in a case that is currently going through the Irish courts. Ryanair says Google is allowing eDreams Odigeo to advertise and “masquerade as Ryanair, promoting false fares to mislead unsuspecting customers into booking via the eDreams website.” Last week, Ireland’s Commercial Court rejected an attempt by Google to have the case thrown out.

Malaysia’s PM Says Airport Murder Investigation Will Be Fair

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said his government would be “objective” in its investigation into the killing of Kim Jong Nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Amid rising tensions between the two countries, CCTV footage appeared to show Kim Jong Nam being attacked last Monday at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by a woman suspected to have smothered a fast-acting poison on him. While a North Korean man, a Vietnamese woman, an Indonesian woman and a Malaysian man have already been detained, Malaysian police said they were still pursuing four North Koreans who fled the country on the day of the attack.

Smart Galleys: Could Connected In-Flight Catering Boost Airline Revenues?

Manufacturers and designers are taking a hard look at the business cases for developing and adopting smart technology in airplane galleys. Diehl’s modular Smart Galley concept features a touch screen that would relieve cabin attendants from running to a passenger’s seat to retrieve an order. The company is currently conducting a deeper feasibility study of Smart Galley, with the goal of designing a cross-platform product. In 2012, Teague and B/E Aerospace codesigned Essence Inserts, a collection of seven smart galley inserts capable of collecting and recording operations data. “Smart galleys are full of possibilities,” says Brian Conner, creative director at Teague. “This, combined with mobile crew devices, would be a game changer in the quality of service offered in the cabin.”
