Paris Orly Gunman Was Under the Influence of Drugs and Alcohol at Time of Attack

Toxicology tests have confirmed that the gunman who was shot dead after attacking a soldier at Paris Orly Airport on Saturday was under the influence of cannabis, cocaine and alcohol. The postmortem tests revealed that 39-year-old Ziyed Ben Belgacem’s blood alcohol level was near twice the legal limit. Investigators are still exploring the motive behind the attack, which led to the closure of the French capital’s second-busiest airport. At the time of his death, Belgacem was carrying a gasoline can in his backpack, as well as 750 euros ($805) in cash and a copy of the Quran. Air traffic at Paris Orly resumed to normal on Sunday afternoon.

APEX Media Spotlight: Qatar Airways’ Business-Class QSuite

APEX Media has launched a new online series that offers different perspectives on passenger experience announcements, products and issues from top industry sources. In the first installment of APEX Media Spotlight, we look at the media’s reaction to what Qatar Airways claims is the “first-ever double bed available in business class.” Qatar Airways’ new business-class seat launch was one of the most eagerly anticipated announcements at ITB Berlin 2017, and the QSuite garnered plenty of media attention and a wide range of opinions. While Skift’s Brian Sumers applauded Qatar for focusing on business class, rather than first, Runway Girl’s Seth Miller and John Walton doubted QSuite’s appeal to business travelers.

Pakistani Authorities Bar PIA’s CEO From Leaving Country Amid Corruption Allegations

The CEO of Pakistan International Airlines, Bernd Hildenbrand, has been barred from leaving the country while authorities investigate corruption allegations related to the lease of aircraft for its premier service launched last year. The Federal Investigation Agency is probing the flag carrier’s German CEO over allegations that PIA overpaid SriLankan Airlines for three Airbus A330s. “It is the prerogative of any government to keep an eye on spending being done by entities owned by it, but one expects this to be done in a reasonable way,” Hildenbrand said. “They don’t seem to have much understanding of the aviation leasing business so things can be explained to them. If they have doubts over my integrity they are welcome to interrogate me.”

Could Virtual Reality Seat Selection Be the Future of Online Booking?

Airlines Technology has unveiled a proof of concept that could allow airlines to sell assigned seats using a virtual reality seat map. The system would be based on IATA’s New Distribution Capability (NDC) program, and would allow customers to use a VR headset to walk around a 3-D cabin environment to select their seats. According to Paras Kumar, cofounder of Airlines Technology, VR seat map selection “is technically possible because of NDC, as we can pull out the seat map of any airline (along with the aircraft model details) in an NDC standardized way.”
