Recaro Secures Major Deals With Alaska Airlines and Shenzhen Airlines

Recaro has announced that Alaska Airlines will be the launch customer of its new domestic first-class seat, the CL4710. The seat will be installed on the airline’s Boeing and Airbus aircraft. It is designed specifically for domestic and short international flights, with flexible equipment options. “Our discerning flyers can look forward to a top-of-the-range new first-class seat that offers them greater comfort and premium features,” says Brad Tilden, Alaska Airlines’ CEO. Recaro has also received a major order from Shenzhen Airlines for CL5710 business-class seats and BL3530 economy-class seats to be linefit on 37 Boeing 737 MAXs and retrofit on 14 Airbus A320s.

And the 2017 Crystal Cabin Award Winners Are…

The 11th Crystal Cabin Awards were presented last night at the historic Hotel Atlantic Kempinski during a ceremony hosted by director of APEX Media Maryann Simson. The award show, an initiative by Hamburg Aviation, was more international than ever before this year, with 85 submissions from 21 countries. Delta Air Lines’ Delta One Suite was the winner of the especially competitive Cabin Concepts category, which also had United Airlines’ Polaris and Bombardier’s C Series in the running. AirFi Lands Six New Customers Thanks to APEX Community

Portable in-flight Wi-Fi platform provider AirFi announced six new aviation customers at Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg this week. Aramco Aviation, Colbalt, Freebird, Salamair, Tailwind and Yakutia Airlines will use AirFi’s portable wireless IFE and connected crew retail EPOS solutions. AirFi CEO Job Heimerikx credits last year’s APEX EXPO for this win: “Making exhibitors feel part of the community is something that APEX does very well. We’re growing very fast in Asia thanks to last year’s event in Singapore.” AirFi is improving the passenger experience with its ITV partnership, which allows AirFi to refresh television content daily, and its technology that enables digital rights management content to be viewed via a browser, meaning passengers won’t have to download an airline app in order to watch content in flight.

Acumen and Zodiac Come Up With an Optima Solution

Yesterday at AIX, Zodiac Seats unveiled the Optima solution, a new business-class seating configuration created by London-based Acumen Design Associates. The product’s modular architecture has features that business-class passengers now expect, including large surface areas, personal item stowage and configurable privacy screens. Optima also provides for an optional centerline double bed while still maintaining aisle access. “We’ve always known that there’s a Holy Grail of a layout,” said Anthony Harcup, associate director, Acumen. “This is when you can get a flat-bed seat that gives every passenger aisle access, privacy, a lot of personal space and maintains seat count.”

SITAONAIR to Deploy 3.5G Mobile Network Over GX Aviation

SITAONAIR will be deploying a 3.5G mobile network over Inmarsat’s high-speed broadband satellite connectivity, GX Aviation, which will be available to airlines by the end of this year. Mobile operators will be able to offer passengers unlimited data bundles, simplifying billing through capped costs. Airlines will also be able to boost ancillary revenues by monetizing the cellular service. “SITAONAIR is the very first in the industry to be introducing future-proof in-flight cellular technologies over GX Aviation,” said Francois-Xavier Mateo, SITAONAIR’s head of Cabin.

ViaSat Launches Second-Generation Equipment for Satellite Platforms

ViaSat has announced upgrades to its in-flight connectivity hardware that will take full advantage of the company’s anticipated space-segment capacity increases from the soon-to-be-launched ViaSat-2 and the future ViaSat-3 constellation. From the antenna to the onboard server, ViaSat’s Gen-2 upgrades will support the full Ka-band spectrum, be able to seamlessly connect with other Ka-band satellites and be forward and backward compatible with its current platforms. “We’re bringing the pipe to life,” said Don Buchman, vice-president of Commercial Mobility at ViaSat.

WestJet Becomes First Customer to Use Farelogix’s New NDC Shopping and Pricing Engine

WestJet was today announced as the first customer actively using FLX Shop & Price, Farelogix’s latest NDC pricing and shopping engine. The next-generation platform enables the Canadian carrier to use dynamic pricing to modify ATPCO fares. “WestJet is the first airline in production with the FLX Shop & Price solution, following our launch of this technology last year,” said Jim Davidson, CEO of Farelogix. “By taking control of its offer using next-generation technology for shopping, WestJet is better positioned to compete for customers, react to competition and improve revenue management through dynamic pricing strategies."
