Air India Proposes Premium Economy to Mitigate Cabin Downgrade Rage

Air India says it is planning to introduce a premium economy section on select all-economy flights after Indian MP Ravindra Gaikwad assaulted a flight attendant. He allegedly hit the crewmember 25 times with his slipper because there was no business-class seating on his flight. The airline says implementing premium economy seating would involve reconfiguring eight aircraft to accommodate politicians who are entitled to business-class travel, but fly on all-economy routes.

Giant Rabbit Found Dead on United Airlines Flight

United Airlines is back in the public eye after a potentially record-breaking 10-month-old giant rabbit died on board one of its flights from London to Chicago. The three-foot continental giant rabbit named Simon was found dead in the cargo hold of the Boeing 767-300 upon landing at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. A United spokesperson said the airline was reviewing the incident. “We were saddened to hear this news. The safety and wellbeing of all the animals that travel with us is of the utmost importance to United Airlines and our PetSafe team,” she said. US Department of Transportation figures show 35 animal deaths occurred across 17 US airlines in 2015.

Highlights From APEX MultiMedia Market 2017 Education Day

At today’s APEX MultiMedia Market Education Day in Berlin, the industry’s most innovative minds explored topics ranging from closed captioning and licensing to social media and digitalization. Among the sessions led by airline representatives were ones on Qatar Airways’ revamped Oryx One in-flight entertainment interface, SAS’ thriving innovation lab, KLM’s hybrid social media strategy and American Airlines’ millennial-friendly IFE campaigns. Luke Jones, TripIt’s senior business development manager, shared an update on the APEX Official Airline Ratings passenger satisfaction polls, and the day ended with APEX Board members taking questions from the audience about the association and the industry.

Amadeus Unveils VR Travel Search and Booking Platform

Amadeus-owned Navitaire, a reservation system for low-cost carriers, has unveiled what it claims is the world’s first virtual reality search and booking experience. The patented technology allows VR-headset users to search for flight prices on a 3-D globe by using their hands to spin it and find a location via electronically connected gloves. The platform also lets users virtually walk through an aircraft cabin to select a seat. “Today, consumers look at what other passengers have had to say about seats on an aircraft on TripAdvisor-owned SeatGuru or via Routehappy. But the information is presented in a 2-D format,” said Rashesh Jethi, Amadeus’ head of Research and Development. “What if you can see the reviews annotating specific seats with proportional dimension in a 3-D model of the aircraft you’re going to fly?”

Airbus Subsidiary Shows Off Modular Cabin Concept at San Jose International Airport

Airbus Ventures’ subsidiary, A³, has created a proof of concept to showcase Transpose, its modular aircraft cabin project. The company is displaying prototypes of an in-flight gym, dining area, children’s play area and social lounges inside Terminal B at San Jose International Airport, with the aim of collecting feedback from passengers. So far, responses have been mainly positive. “Anything that makes a flight more fun or [brings] more activities on a flight, I think that's a good idea,” said Hung Truong, a San Jose resident. Brian Fitzgerald, another local, said, “I think then people will probably pay a little bit more to be able to do that and arrive at their destination very fresh.”

Aeroflot Representatives Defend Airline Over Alleged Cabin Crew Weight Policy

Representatives from Aeroflot yesterday defended the airline’s alleged policing of female employees’ appearances, following two unsuccessful lawsuits by flight attendants. The women claimed they were moved from long-haul routes to lower-paid domestic flights because of their looks, also asserting that the airline docked benefits for female employees who exceeded US size 10 clothing. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, two members of the airline’s public council appeared to defend the practice, saying, “[P]art of the reason people pay for [Aeroflot] tickets is the appearance of its employees.” The airline later released a statement saying the two men had appeared at the press conference “on their own initiative” and their comments did not necessarily reflect the airline’s position.
