PXCom’s PXVision Brings Passengers a 360° External View

PXCom and IrisAero have partnered to create PXVision, a new service allowing passengers to watch live 360-degree external videos. Whether streamed through a seatback IFE screen or a passenger’s personal electronic device, “PXVision allows passengers to discover points of interest the aircraft is flying over in real time,” said Cyril Jean, CEO of PXCom, which won the APEX Cool Award at the 2016 APEX EXPO in Singapore. “We add in pictograms, which the passengers can click on, and a pop-up or a microsite appears on the screen.” The service is on display at ATR’s showcase at the Paris Air Show this week.

[IMAGES] Boeing Gives Sneak Peek of New Mid-Sized Aircraft

Boeing released the first image of its new mid-sized airplane at the Paris Air Show yesterday. Unofficially dubbed the 797, it would represent the manufacturer’s first new family of commercial aircraft since the Dreamliner was announced more than a decade ago. The jet would fill a gap between the 737 and 787, seating between 220 and 270 passengers on flights of up to 5,200 nautical miles, or just over 10 hours. Boeing says it has talked to 57 potential customers and estimates there could be demand for 4,000 such aircraft over a 20-year period starting around 2025.

Boom Has 76 Orders From Five Customers for Its Supersonic Passenger Jet

Boom has announced that five airlines have placed a total of 76 orders for its supersonic aircraft. The Denver-based startup revealed a new design for its XB-1 Supersonic Demonstrator jet at the Paris Air Show. The prototype is scheduled to begin flying late next year, subject to passing performance and safety tests. Virgin is the only known customer of the supersonic passenger jet, with the other four set to be announced at special events. “Airlines are excited for something new and different to offer their passengers, and we're thrilled that major world airlines share our vision for a future of faster, more accessible supersonic travel,” said Blake Scholl, Boom’s founder and CEO.

Drama at 35,000 Feet: Icelandair to Host an In-Flight Theater Performance

Icelandair will host a trio of live theater shows, featuring an all-employee cast at 35,000 feet. The in-flight drama will detail the airline’s history as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations. The first installment is scheduled to take place on board a flight from London to Keflavik on September 8, followed by a second act in Icelandair’s Saga Lounge during a stopover. The third show will be performed on the journey’s final leg from Iceland to New York on September 10. The in-flight theatrics are part of the “Icelandair Stopover Pass” initiative, which also offers tickets to private concerts, trips to Icelandic soccer games and backstage passes to a music festival, all starring the airline’s staff.

Retail inMotion to Advise Aer Lingus on Its In-Flight Retail Program

LSG Group subsidiary Retail inMotion has struck an agreement with Aer Lingus, which will see it act in an advisory role to the Irish carrier’s duty-free and retail services. The partnership will initially include consultation on in-flight retail and duty-free selection and management, crew training and menu card and catalog design. “We are delighted to have been selected by Aer Lingus to become their retail partner,” said Retail inMotion CEO Stefan Patermann. “We will look to leverage our industry expertise, innovative solutions and customer-centric approach to one of the most prestigious onboard retail programs in the industry.”

Air France Launches In-Flight Meditation Program

Air France has added a series of meditation sessions to its in-flight entertainment portfolio on long-haul flights. The Mind app offers six mindfulness sessions for children and six for adults, each made up of an audio recording and video. The airline worked with Christophe André, a French psychotherapist and psychiatrist, to design the adult sessions, using content from his best seller Mindfulness Day After Day. The children’s sessions were put together by Eline Snel, with content adapted from her book Sitting Still Like a Frog. After testing the app on a trial flight, 90 percent of passengers reported feeling relaxed and 85 percent said they were more comfortable.

Embraer Secures E-Jet Orders From Three Airlines

Embraer secured orders from three airline customers for its E-Jet family aircraft at the Paris Air Show yesterday. Fuji Dream Airlines placed an order for three E-175 aircraft, with options for an additional three. Japan Airlines ordered an E-190 aircraft for its J-Air regional subsidiary, which operates an all-Embraer fleet of 24 E-Jet aircraft. And KLM Cityhopper ordered two additional E-190 aircraft to replace two Fokker 70s.
