AirFi Makes ITV Content Available in Flight on Same Day as UK Transmission

Portable onboard Wi-Fi platform provider AirFi and ITV, the UK's largest commercial broadcaster, have teamed up to make ITV's content available in flight on the same day as UK transmission. The partnership, which was announced at FTE Dublin this week, means that passengers will have access to series including Coronation Street, Emmerdale and Love Island on the same day as viewers watching at home. According to AirFi CEO Job Heimerikx, this is possible due to AirFi Box's efficient content upload cycles and an extremely flexible content licensing structure. The launch customer for the AirFi/ITV service will be revealed in the coming weeks, and the content will be available on board shortly thereafter.

Mexico Fines Five Airlines for Checked Bag Fees

Mexico's federal consumer protection agency announced on Tuesday it has fined five airlines for wrongly charging passengers for their first checked baggage item. The Federal Attorney's Office of Consumer imposed fines totaling $1.24 million on Volaris, Interjet, Aeromexico, VivaAerobus and JetBlue Airways for charging customers traveling on flights from Mexico City to the United States and Canada. Recent changes to Mexico's federal consumer protection and civil aviation laws entitle passengers to a complimentary checked bag of up to 55 pounds (25 kilograms) and two carry-on bags on flights originating in Mexico.

Will Passengers Stand for VivaColombia’s Idea to Make Flying Cheaper?

A Colombian low-cost carrier has renewed calls for allowing standing seats in the aircraft cabin, in an effort to drive down prices. “There are people out there right now researching whether you can fly standing up,” said VivaColombia’s founder and CEO, William Shaw. “We’re very interested in anything that makes travel less expensive.” The idea, which was first proposed by Airbus in 2003, has previously received enthusiasm from airlines such as Ryanair, but less so from aviation regulators. Reacting to the idea of standing flights, Colombia’s civil aviation director, Alfredo Bocanegra, said, “People have to travel like human beings … Anyone who has ridden on public mass transit knows that it’s not the best when you’re standing.”

IAG Allocates 20 Airbus A320neos to Iberia

Iberia today disclosed that it has firm orders for 20 Airbus A320neos, worth $1.84 billion at list prices. Delivery of the new aircraft will begin in the first half of 2018 and continue through to 2021, as part of a revamp of the Spanish carrier’s short- and medium-haul fleets. The A320neos were previously announced as part of a much larger batch of orders and options taken out in August 2013 by Iberia’s parent company, IAG, which had reportedly negotiated a significant reduction in cost, compared to the aircraft’s list price.

Geneva Airport Sees 70% Reduction in Shoe Alarms at Security With Slimline Sensors

This week at FTE Dublin, Sedect SA displayed Seeflow SMD, an ultrathin sensor for early detection of metal in shoes at security checkpoints. According to security officials at Geneva Airport, which has been using the technology since late 2016, Seeflow SMD has led to a significant reduction in the number of security holdups triggered by metal in passenger footwear. “We measured the number of shoe alarms sounding since the Seeflow SMD was installed at the end of 2016 and compared the results to the same period in the previous year,” commented Adrien Semoros, technical manager of Geneva Airport’s security department. “We observed a 70-percent drop in shoe alarms … [That is] the number of passengers that could fill 7.2 A320 planes, every day.”

Heathrow to Open Post-Security Fitness Studio

London’s Heathrow Airport is planning to open an airside exercise studio in partnership with wellness and fitness company FlyFit this coming autumn. The studio will be situated in the post-security departures area inside Terminal 2, offering travelers instructor-led strength, yoga and cardio classes. FlyFit’s Heathrow facility will also provide gym gear, showers and healthy food options. “We picked Heathrow as our FlyFit launch partner because they agree with our ethos of changing the way people travel,” said Brian Chappon, FlyFit’s founder and CEO. “We’re trying to create a new experience in the travel space.”

Court Rules Against El Al’s Policy of Changing Women's Seats on Religious Grounds

El Al can no longer ask women to move seats on religious grounds, after losing a case brought forward by Renee Rabinowitz, an 82-year-old Holocaust survivor and former lawyer. After boarding an El Al flight in 2015 from Newark to Tel Aviv, Rabinowitz was asked to change seats because an ultra-Orthodox Jewish male passenger had objected to sitting next to her. On June 22, a court ruled in her favor, confirming that the practice of asking women to move seats on religious grounds is illegal. The ruling now requires El Al to change its policies within 45 days of the decision and introduce the new procedures to all in-flight staff in writing and through training.
