US Announces Enhanced Security Measures to Avoid Expanded Laptop Ban

US Homeland Security secretary John Kelly announced on Wednesday enhanced security measures for inbound flights to the United States, in an effort to prevent the expansion of the government’s in-flight ban on laptops and other large electronic devices. The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) new measures involve enhanced screening of electronic devices and better deployment of explosives-detecting canines. Kelly said if airlines refuse to implement the new measures, they could be barred from operating direct flights to the US. “The threat has not diminished,” Kelly said. “In fact, I am concerned that we are seeing renewed interest on the part of terrorist groups to go after the aviation sector.” The DHS has not disclosed a date for when the measures will go into effect.

Light Idea: Schiphol to Test Express Security Lane for Travelers With Little Baggage

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport is about to launch a trial that allows travelers with little or no baggage to use an express lane during the security screening process. Beginning in July, passengers with no more than a laptop case, small backpack or handbag will be able to use the new express lane. Schiphol is deploying an extra 350 to 400 staff to help deal with the anticipated 12.4 million passengers expected during the summer season. “This trial will speed up the boarding process for passengers with little baggage, which in turn contributes to a smooth process at the airport,” Schiphol said in a statement. “Due to costs and convenience, an increasing number of people are choosing to travel with hand baggage only, which leads to more work at security checkpoints.”
