Inmarsat Searching for In-Flight Connectivity Partnership With a US Telecoms Provider

Inmarsat is look for a telecoms partner in the US to help launch in-flight connectivity services in the region once the Federal Communications Commission carries out its 14 GHz spectrum auction in 2018, said the company’s CEO Rupert Pearce.The move, which would be similar to Inmarsat’s joint venture with Deutsche Telekom for the European Aviation Network, would involve an air-to-ground network supplemented by the satellite operator’s technology, he said.

Airbus Pursuing Big A380 Sales Push

Airbus is pursuing a sales push aimed at extending the life of its A380 superjumbo. Sources told Bloomberg that Airbus’ outgoing COO John Leahy aims to secure orders by the Dubai Air Show in November. Key to the sales campaign is selling 20 A380s worth $8.7 billion to Emirates, and follow-up orders from British Airways, ANA and Thai Airways, said the unnamed sources.

ViaSat Receives STC For Its Gen-2 IFEC System on Boeing 737s

ViaSat announced it has received Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) approval from the FAA for its second-generation in-flight entertainment and connectivity system. The STC means ViaSat can offer its Gen-2 Ka-band radome, antenna, entertainment software and in-flight Wi-Fi on Boeing 737 aircraft. The equipment was certified after installation on a Qantas 737-800 last month.

Too Many Robots in the Kitchen – Or Not Enough?

Robots are ideal for repetitive, high-volume tasks. Universal Robotics and NxtGen Robotics’ drinks cart robot quickly determines which cans are empty, partially full or unopened, and sorts them for recycling or redeployment. SATS is introducing automated cooking to its workflow: Robots will be frying up rice and noodles to provide optimum flavor in the airline cabin.

Ryanair Submits “Non-Binding” Offer for Alitalia

Ryanair confirmed yesterday it has made a “non-binding offer” for Alitalia, ahead of a full-scale tender process. CEO Michael O’Leary said Ryanair’s interest was “serious,” but conditional on “significant restructuring so that Alitalia could reasonably be seen to operate on a profitable basis.” Italian media reports said 10 airlines had submitted non-binding bids for Alitalia, which entered administration on May 2.

British Airways Launches New Liberty London-Designed Amenity Kits

British Airways unveiled new first-class amenity kits, designed through its partnership with Liberty London. The in-flight kits are the second in a series of design collaborations with the iconic London department store. The bags, available in different versions for men and women, each feature elaborate print patterns and include toiletries from The Refinery and Aromatherapy Associates, respectively.

SATS Forecasts Challenges Ahead

Singapore-based company SATS expressed caution regarding its outlook for the rest of the fiscal year. The in-flight catering company said there were few signs that airline yields will improve, and net profits are down 1.8 percent from the same period in 2016. The company says it plans to increase the use of technology to improve productivity, gain greater scale economies and link regional operations.
