US Rejects HNA Group’s $416-Million Investment in GEE

HNA Group’s planned $416-million investment in a joint venture with Global Eagle Entertainment has collapsed following a rejection by the US Committee on Foreign Investment. The deal, announced in November 2016, would have seen HNA Group’s Shareco subsidiary acquire a 34.9-percent stake in GEE and 51-percent majority ownership of the JV, which would deliver in-flight entertainment and connectivity to HNA-owned airlines.

44% of Pax Would Stop Flying With Preferred Airline Due to Poor Connectivity

Inmarsat’s third annual global Inflight Connectivity Survey shows 44 percent of passengers would stop flying with their preferred airline in the next year if it offered poor quality in-flight connectivity. Also, 61 percent of passengers who have experienced good in-flight Wi-Fi consider it more important than in-flight entertainment when choosing an airline.

Air China Selects Panasonic eX3 IFE for Airbus A350 Fleet

Air China has selected Panasonic Avionics’ eX3 in-flight entertainment system for its upcoming Airbus A350 fleet. The new IFE hardware will come linefit on the wide-body aircraft with the first A350 scheduled for delivery in December. Air China will also offer global connectivity services in partnership with Panasonic on board its A350s.

Immfly Partners With The Weather Network

Immfly has partnered with The Weather Network to provide live in-flight weather updates through its wireless in-flight entertainment platform. Starting this month, passengers on board XL Airways, Volotea and Iberia Express have been able to view destination weather data provided by El Tiempo, The Weather Channel’s Spanish counterpart, via Immfly’s app-based IFE platform.

US Mobile to Launch Unlimited In-Flight Wi-Fi Plans on 20 Airlines

Wireless carrier US Mobile is planning to launch unlimited Wi-Fi access in more than 120 countries and on 20 airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Virgin America. The company says its pricing structure will start at $10 per month for unlimited in-flight Wi-Fi and access to on-the-ground wireless hotspots.

Russia’s Second Largest Airline Using Blockchain to Issue Tickets

Russia’s second biggest carrier, S7 Airlines, this week started issuing passenger tickets on a blockchain, through a collaboration with Alfa-Bank, the country’s largest private bank. According to Russian newspaper Kommersant, S7 is using an ethereum blockchain to reduce settlement times with S7 Ticket, the airline’s ticketing agent, and streamline payment processing by deducting the agent commission automatically after ticket sales.

Canada’s NewLeaf Travel Rebranded as Flair Airlines

NewLeaf Travel has changed its name to Flair Airlines after it was bought by the charter carrier of the same name on June 7. Flair Airlines, which had been supplying the low-cost flight ticket seller with aircraft and crews since launching one year ago, chose to rebrand NewLeaf to “better reflect a unified company,” said Chris Lapointe, the airline's vice-president of Commercial Operations.
