TSA Announces Stricter Electronics Screening Measures

Travelers going through US airport security will soon face stricter screening under new TSA measures announced yesterday. The rules require passengers to remove all electronic items larger than a cellphone for separate screening. The TSA said the rules had been tested in a pilot project at 10 airports in cities including Detroit, Los Angeles, Boston and Phoenix.

Vision-Box Signs Contract With Australia for Biometric Immigration Processing

Vision-Box announced today it signed a contract with Australia’s government to deliver the world’s first automated contactless clearance processes for travelers landing at all Australian international airports. The three-year agreement will assist the government in collecting and verifying biometric passenger data. The technology also allows trusted travelers to self-process without needing to present a passport.

Singapore Airlines Completes Tigerair and Scoot Merger

Singapore Airlines has completed the integration of Tigerair and Scoot into a single low-cost carrier brand. The unified airline has been operating under the Scoot brand since Tigerair’s last flight landed in India early Tuesday morning, arriving from Singapore. The merged airline offers a combined network of 60 destinations, operated by Scoot’s all-Boeing 787 fleet and Tigerair’s Airbus A320-family fleet.

Pax Prefer Posting Reviews Away From Airlines’ Social Media Pages

Toulouse Business School and BrandsEye’s report about how US airlines American, Delta and United are perceived both on and offline shows that many consumers prefer posting reviews away from a brand’s social media pages, opting for blogs and forums instead. The study also found that, while authors aged 18–24 posted 17 percent positive and 57 percent negative content, there’s an increased rate of neutral posts among older age groups.

Lima’s International Airport Approved for Major Expansion

Lima's Jorge Chavez International Airport will undergo a major expansion after Lima Airport Partners, its Fraport majority-owned operator, and Peru’s government signed an agreement. Work on the $1.5-billion project is scheduled to begin in 2018, including the construction of a second runway and a new passenger terminal. The airport handled 18.8 million passengers last year.

[PHOTOS] El Al Unveils First Dreamliner

El Al has unveiled its first of 16 Boeing 787s, painted in the airline’s white and blue color scheme and featuring Israel’s Star of David flag on the tail. The airline’s first Dreamliner is scheduled to start flying between Tel Aviv and London in September and between Tel Aviv and Newark in late October. The new wide-body fleet will replace El Al’s Boeing 747, 767-300 and 777-200 aircraft.

Airlines for Europe Blasts EU for Understaffed Borders

Thousands of flights have faced delays because EU border controls are not adequately staffed to comply with tightened border checks, according to Airlines for Europe (A4E). Thomas Reynaert, managing director at A4E said passengers had waited up to four hours in some cases: “At some airports, flight delays have increased by 300 percent compared to last year.”
