Austrian Airlines Introduces Profile, IFE Personalization Tool From Spafax

Austrian Airlines has become the second carrier in the Lufthansa Group to deploy Profile, Spafax’s entertainment personalization platform. Austrian’s passengers can now access the airline’s full in-flight entertainment listing online to learn what will be available on their flight. The tool uses a content attribute filtering system to deliver targeted content based on what passengers are viewing.

Silver Airways Orders Up to 50 ATR-600 Series Turboprops

Silver Airways has announced its intention to purchase up to 50 ATR-600 series turboprops, worth up to a combined $1.1 billion. The Fort Lauderdale-based carrier’s initial order is for 20 ATR 42-600s, a 46–50 seat model, with the option to upgauge to the larger 68–78 seat ATR 72-600 model. Silver Airways plans to receive up to four ATR aircraft by the end of 2017, making it the first North American 600 series turboprop customer.

A4A Says No Role For Government in Seat-Pitch Regulation

Airlines for America (A4A) says there is no need for government involvement in airlines’ seat-pitch decisions, so long as the FAA assures aircraft seats meet safety standards. Following a US federal court ruling forcing the FAA to reconsider regulating seat sizes, A4A said, “There is no need for government to interfere with the market-driven solutions that are delivering a better, safer and more comfortable flight experience.”

Virgin America Unveils Collectible Travel Kits

Virgin America has unveiled a complimentary collectible kit series called City Pods for first-class passengers. The series, which is available for purchase on select flights, was designed by WESSCO International and is inspired by Virgin America’s online booking “cheeky avatars” and its 24 city destinations. The circular-shaped City Pods kits feature colorful designs and include eyeshades and a stylus pen.

US Senate Approves Higher Passenger Airport Fee Proposal to Fund Improvements

A US Senate panel approved a proposal that would increase the amount airports can charge passengers to pay for facility improvements from the current $4.50 federal cap. Kevin Burke, president and CEO of Airports Council International, North America, attributed the proposal’s approval to his organization’s heavy lobbying effort on Capitol Hill. Airlines for America, however, described it as a “massive secret tax hike.”

Delta’s Latest Ad Campaign Brings Global Street Art to LA

Delta Air Lines has unveiled a series of painted wall murals in Los Angeles. The artworks are recreations of murals found in London, Melbourne and Mexico City, and feature Delta branding along with a message inviting passersby to “find the original” in each of their respective cities. The featured artists include Shok-1, Nacho Bernal and Steen Jones.

Tougher Schengen Border Rules Causing Long Waits at European Airports

Travelers flying during the busy European summer vacation period are experiencing long wait times at airports across the continent due to the introduction of tougher Schengen area border controls. Aage Duenhaupt, a spokesperson for Airlines for Europe, said travelers from the UK could experience delays of up to two hours this coming weekend, with 200,000 passengers arriving in and departing from Mallorca, for example.
