Qatar Airways Reverses Plan to Acquire American Airlines Stake

Qatar Airways has dropped its plan to buy a 10 percent stake in American Airlines. The Gulf carrier said in a statement that American’s latest public disclosure demonstrated “the investment no longer meets our objectives.” Qatar Airways’ interest became public in June, but was met with immediate resistance in the United States. “We respect Qatar Airways’ decision,” said Matt Miller, a spokesperson for American.

Boeing Invests in Augmented/Virtual Reality Company

Boeing announced yesterday an investment by its HorizonX venture arm in C360 Technologies, a Pittsburgh-based company focusing on 360-degree video and augmented/virtual reality. C360’s solutions were featured as part of FOX Sports' telecasts of the 2017 Daytona 500 and MLB All-Star events. Boeing said potential aerospace applications include more capable autonomous systems and other advanced platforms.

Could North Korean Missile Tests Pose a Risk to Airlines?

New concerns are emerging that North Korea’s missile testing may pose a risk to airlines flying over the Sea of Japan. According to CNN, on Friday, Air France Flight 293 passed by the splashdown zone of North Korea’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile test five to 10 minutes before impact. Air France said in a statement that “North Korea's missile test zones don't interfere in any way” with the airline's flight paths.

Fast Fashion: Uniqlo Unveils Its First Airport Vending Machine

Uniqlo has introduced a clothing vending machine at Oakland International Airport. The Japanese fashion retailer plans to roll out nine more Uniqlo To Go machines, at US shopping malls and airports in cities including Los Angeles and Houston. The first of the touchscreen-operated vending machines opened yesterday, selling Uniqlo’s $69.90 down jackets and $14.90 Heattech tops.

Reuters/Ipsos Poll: American Passengers Prefer Cheaper Flights Over Perks

Eighty-three percent of Americans place ticket price among their main consideration when booking a flight, according to Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll results, released Wednesday. Of the 2,316 respondents, 60 percent said they would not pay extra to avoid a middle seat. About 52 percent said they would not pay more to fly with their preferred airline.

[PHOTOS] China Airlines Unveils Blue Magpie Airbus A350 Livery

China Airlines has unveiled its second bird-themed Airbus A350 livery, featuring the Taiwan blue magpie native to the island. Named “Urocissa Caerulea,” after the magpie’s scientific name, the Taiwanese carrier’s latest avian-themed A350 joins the “Syrmaticus Mikado,” which features the Mikado pheasant. The Urocissa Caerulea livery is debuting on China Airlines’ Taipei-Vancouver route.

Why Was HNA Group’s Investment in Global Eagle Entertainment Blocked?

HNA Group’s proposed $416-million investment, via its Beijing Shareco Technologies subsidiary, in a joint venture with Global Eagle Entertainment failed to secure US government clearance last week. Why was it blocked? Protection of customer data passing through GEE’s in-flight Wi-Fi service was one reason. But HNA Group’s opaque ownership structure is also raising questions.
