SmartSky Begins Deploying Its 4G ATG Network

SmartSky Networks has started deploying its 4G LTE-based air-to-ground (ATG) in-flight connectivity network. Using 60 MHz of spectrum and patented beam-forming technology, SmartSky claims its network will provide 10 times beyond the speed and capacity of existing ATG networks at a lower cost. The first Supplemental Type Certification is on track for FAA submission in the near term.

Canadian Interactive Content Developer Signs Agreement to Build an IFE System

Calgary-based ePlay Digital, a developer of e-sports and interactive content technologies, announced yesterday that it had closed an agreement with an undisclosed Global Fortune 500 company to build a new in-flight entertainment system. Mobivo, ePlay’s B2B subsidiary, will deliver the contract. The company's experience includes building video apps for ESPN, FIFA World Cup, Sportsnet, Intel, Cineplex, and Sony Pictures Entertainment

More Capacity, More Legroom: Ryanair Unveils Zodiac-Designed Slimline Seats

Ryanair unveiled the seating design for its upcoming Boeing 737 MAX 200 fleet. The new cabins will contain 197 seats, compared to 189 on its fleet of 737-800s. The Zodiac ergonomic slimline seats offer 31 inches of pitch compared to the 30 inches for seats on existing 737-800s. The new designs continue Ryanair’s tradition of doing away with seatback pockets, to maintain a “25-minute turnaround, and reduce cleaning costs,” said a Ryanair spokesperson.

Miami International Partners With SITA to Add Mobile Passport Control to Its App

Miami International Airport has become the world’s first airport to incorporate Mobile Passport Control into its own mobile app. The airport partnered with SITA in developing the service, which went live on Thursday. Mobile Passport Control is available to American and Canadian citizens at 21 US airports, but until now, was only offered through the stand-alone Mobile Passport app.

TAP Portugal to Launch Initiative Promoting Portuguese Wines

TAP Portugal is planning a new onboard wine selection, with the aim of becoming “the world’s largest channel for speaking about and tasting Portuguese wines.” To achieve this, the airline is accepting tenders from producers, with a view to purchasing 2.5 million bottles of wine over the next two years. TAP Portugal will also teach cabin crew about the wines and host tasting events for journalists and opinion makers.

UK Authorities Lift Electronics Ban on Flights From Jordan

UK authorities today lifted the onboard electronics ban imposed on larger phones, laptops and tablets on Royal Jordanian flights from Jordan to the UK. The decision to rescind the ban is conditional on applying additional security measures for UK-bound flights. The UK lifted the electronics ban on flights from Turkey in late July, but restrictions are still in place on flights from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Tunisia and Lebanon.
