Virgin Australia to Offer Wi-Fi on International Flights

Virgin Australia announced plans to offer in-flight Wi-Fi on most of its domestic and international aircraft. The airline said a trial of Gogo’s 2Ku connectivity on one of its Boeing 737-800s had proven successful and a wider rollout will begin in October across 90 percent of its fleet. Virgin Australia CEO John Borghetti said the carrier will offer a base level of Wi-Fi for free on domestic flights.

Efforts to Revive Midwest Express Are Underway

Midwest Express could soon be relaunched. A new website registered as says two business partners are seeking investors and potential employees as part of an effort to revive the Milwaukee-based carrier, which ceased operations in 2009. “We have a number of people we are working with, and because of that we can’t really make any announcement,” said Curt Drumm, one of the partners.

JetBlue's Customer Service Will "Gladly" Communicate on Your Platform

JetBlue this week announced a new partnership and investment in Gladly, a startup that specializes in simplifying and unifying customer communication across multiple channels. The platform will allow the airline’s customers to continue communicating with service agents while switching between phone, text, chat, e-mail, Twitter and Facebook Messenger without having to recap their previous conversations.

TripIt Adds Step-by-Step Navigation Inside Airport Terminals

TripIt has introduced a new feature that allows users to see the distance between two specific points in an airport, with step-by-step walking directions for users subscribed to its upgraded version, TripIt Pro. The latest update of the iOS and Android app also includes enhanced maps for 50 major airports worldwide. These maps detail the locations of facilities including charging stations, ATMs, restrooms and dining options.

GTAA Releases RFP for Massive Regional Transit Hub at Toronto Pearson Airport

In Toronto and New York, airport authorities and city planners are working to facilitate the movement of people to, from and around busy airport terminals. Six months after New York Governor Andrew Cuomo issued a request for proposal (RFP) for an AirTrain station at La Guardia, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority (GTAA) has followed suit with an RFP for design consulting services for the concept development of a regional transit center.

Could a Sleeper Pod Bus Service Rival Regional Airline Routes?

A new overnight bus service between Los Angeles and San Francisco wants to compete with airlines by promising a journey of good sleep. Called Cabin, the company offers buses equipped with soundproof sleeper pods stacked like bunk beds. Roundtrip tickets for the six-hour journey cost $230, and other amenities include water, coffee, melatonin supplements and a communal area for people who aren’t sleepy.

Fiji Airways Launches Online Auction Tool for Business-Class Upgrades

Fiji Airways has launched a website auction tool called Bula Bid that allows economy-class customers to bid for upgrades to business class on international flights. Travelers can submit bids between seven days to 24 hours before a scheduled departure. “Interest among guests for Bula Bid has been extremely high during the soft-launch period,” said Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways managing director and CEO.
