[PHOTOS] Ethiopian Airlines Refurbishes Its Boeing 767 Fleet

Ethiopian Airlines has retrofitted the first of its Boeing 767-300ER fleet with fully lie-flat business-class seats and a refurbished economy-class cabin. The Cloud Nine business-class seats feature 17-inch seatback displays, and a new wireless in-flight entertainment system is available to passengers in both cabin classes. Ethiopian Airlines has invested more than $6 million to retrofit its six 767s and expects the upgrades to be completed by December.

Qantas Targets Chinese Millennials With Alibaba Group MoU

Qantas has signed a memorandum of understanding with Alibaba Group’s online travel service platform to allow customers to book flights on the website. Previously branded as Alitrip, Fliggy is a major direct-sales platform for airlines targeting the Chinese market, with 75 percent of users under 35. “Fliggy is an exciting opportunity for us to have a connection with younger Chinese travelers,” said Gareth Evans, Qantas’ chief executive of International and Freight.

Loftleidir Icelandic Outlines Big Plans for TACV Cabo Verde Airlines

The government of Cape Verde has chosen Loftleidir Icelandic as the strategic management partner for TACV Cabo Verde Airlines, ahead of its planned privatization. The Icelandair Group subsidiary will assist in the management of TACV, with the aim of developing the island archipelago into a competitive connecting hub, linking Europe, Africa and the Americas.

Boeing Elects Caroline Kennedy to Its Board

Boeing’s board of directors last week elected Caroline Kennedy as a director. Kennedy, who is the daughter of late president John F. Kennedy, will serve on Boeing’s audit and finance board committees. In her previous role, Kennedy was the US ambassador to Japan, serving from 2013 until January 2017. “Her diversity of experience and accompanying insights will broaden and strengthen our board,” said Boeing chairman, president and CEO Dennis Muilenburg.

SkyGuru to Appease Flyer Fears With API for Airports, Airlines and OEMs

SkyGuru, a mobile app designed to alleviate in-flight anxiety, recently made its API available to airlines, airports, aircraft manufacturers and in-flight entertainment system providers. The platform gives SkyGuru’s partners the ability to integrate professional flight data, including turbulence indices, wind changes and anticipated flight times, into their own software.

Drunken Passenger Arrests Up by 50% at UK Airports

The number of passengers arrested for suspected drunken behavior at UK airports and on flights has increased by 50 percent in the past year, according to a BBC investigation. A total of 387 people were arrested between February 2016 and February 2017, compared with 255 during the 12 months preceding. More than half of cabin crew who responded to a survey said they had witnessed disruptive drunken behavior at UK airports.

Auckland Airport Signs E-Commerce Deal With AOE

Auckland Airport has struck a deal with global technology service provider AOE to use its e-commerce platform with the aim of boosting non-aviation revenue. Expected in mid-2018, OM³, or Omnichannel Multi-Merchant Marketplace, will enable international travelers to purchase from multiple airport retailers in one app-based transaction and collect items from a single pickup point.
