Airberlin Files for Insolvency

Airberlin has filed for bankruptcy protection after its biggest shareholder, Etihad Airways, withdrew funding. Germany’s second-largest carrier said it will continue flying with the help of a government bridging loan of 150 million euros. Lufthansa and another unidentified airline, reported by Reuters to be easyJet, are in talks with airberlin about a partial rescue.

IATA Figures Show Air Traffic Growth in First Half of 2017 at Fastest in 12 Years

The latest June figures released by IATA for global passenger air traffic data show that demand (measured in total revenue passenger kilometers) rose by 7.8 percent compared with last year. The first six months of 2017 shows the industry experienced a 12-year high in air traffic growth of 7.9 percent and a record first-half load factor of 81 percent. “A brighter economic picture and lower airfares are keeping demand for travel strong,” Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general, said.

Airborne Wireless Network Signs Agreement With ViaLight for Laser-Based IFC

Airborne Wireless Network (ABWN) announced it has entered a design and manufacturing services agreement with ViaLight Communications, a developer of laser-based communication products. ABWN says ViaLight will design and manufacture a “custom hybrid synchronized laser-based communication system” to link neighboring aircraft and ground stations on its planned Infinitus Super Highway in-flight broadband network.

Delta Plans New York and LA as Hubs for Bombardier C Series Fleet

Delta Air Lines is planning to make New York and Los Angeles the main bases for its upcoming fleet of Bombardier C Series aircraft. The airline is the first major US carrier to buy the 100-seat C Series, with orders for 75 jets and options for a further 50. Delta plans to enter the first of these into service in spring 2018.

Ryanair Calls for Limits on Alcohol Sales at UK Airports

Ryanair has called on UK airports to cap alcohol sales to passengers and to ban all alcohol sales before 10 a.m. The proposals come after figures showed a 50 percent rise in arrests related to suspected drunken behavior at airports in a year. “It’s completely unfair that airports can profit from the unlimited sale of alcohol to passengers and leave the airlines to deal with the safety consequences,” Ryanair’s marketing director, Kenny Jacobs, said.

[PHOTOS] Crystal Cruises Takes Delivery of Luxury-Class Boeing 777

Crystal Cruises has taken delivery of its new Boeing 777-200LR, with Edie Rodriguez, the company’s CEO, touting it as “the most luxuriously appointed aircraft in the private aircraft industry.” The aircraft features a large cocktail-bar area, with seating for 24 guests, and tabletops that can be inverted to to play video games. The cabin features stone veneer, marble accents and 88 first-class lie-flat seats. A nine-day tour on board the new 777 with stops at luxury hotels in Kenya and Tahiti costs $45,000 per passenger.

Going the Distance: Low-Cost Carriers Fly Further With New Aircraft and Added Amenities

How are low-cost carriers, known for their no-frills streamlined operations and point-to-point networks, extending into long-haul operations? CAPA chief analyst Brendan Sobie says Asia, by nature of its location and demographics, has been a testing ground for the low-cost, long-haul model. In June, AirAsia X became the first Asian LCC to fly to the US with its route to Hawaii. Meanwhile, Scoot has plans to grow its European destinations, with synergies between Scoot and Tigerair serving as a competitive advantage.
