Global Eagle Secures Linefit Approval for Wi-Fi on Boeing 737 MAX

Global Eagle Entertainment is now offering its Airconnect 3.0 in-flight Wi-Fi system as a linefit option for Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft. This is the first connectivity platform added to the Boeing catalog for factory assembly installation of the next-generation aircraft type. Several Boeing 737 MAX customers are reportedly already scheduled to receive aircraft linefit with Airconnect 3.0 this fall.

Level Announces “Pair and Pay” In-Flight Payment Platform

Level, IAG’s recently launched low-cost carrier, has launched “Pair and Pay,” a mobile payment method for purchasing in-flight services. The technology enables passengers to connect personal devices with their individual seatback screen to buy food, drinks, Wi-Fi packages and duty-free products. IAG said it will add in-flight entertainment content to the service in the future.

Amadeus Says There Is No Such Thing as a Typical APAC Traveler

Amadeus has released what it claims is “the most comprehensive research on Asia Pacific (APAC) travelers to date,” concluding that there is no such thing as a typical APAC traveler across the entire region. “Stark contrasts in behaviors, needs and preferences were observed across all geographic and demographic lines,” the report says.

Wizz Air Launches “Fare Lock” Service

Wizz Air today launched a service allowing customers to “lock” a fare for a limited time before committing to a booking. For a fee of £3 per flight segment, per passenger, the Hungarian low-cost carrier’s “fare lock” service will secure a chosen fare for 48 hours without it selling out. The service is available for customers booking flights more than seven days prior to their outbound departure date.

Cathay Pacific CEO Bets on Major PaxEx Investments

Cathay Pacific's new CEO, Rupert Hogg, said he plans to focus on improving the airline’s service amid declining passenger numbers and revenue. New lounges at major airports, in-flight Wi-Fi, more dining options and self-check-in facilities are among the planned passenger experience upgrades Hogg said will help nurture the Hong Kong carrier back to health.

Flag Carriers Create Sub-Brands to Compete Against LCCs

Can an airline brand with a self-described millennial attitude succeed by targeting customers who want a simpler, more modern airline service? Air France thinks so. In July, it announced Joon, a new airline that will adopt an alternate brand identity for Air France-KLM. The Franco-Dutch airline group is joining a growing list of flag carriers seeing success with the creation of low-cost, or brand alternative, divisions.

British Airways and Loganair Confirm Codeshare

British Airways and Loganair have confirmed their plans to codeshare. Beginning September 1, passengers traveling from the Scottish Highlands and Islands can book flights on BA’s network, connecting through Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness. Loganair will operate independently for the first time in nearly 25 years when its franchise agreement with Flybe expires on August 31.
