Singapore Airlines’ Revamped A380 to Be Revealed November 2

Singapore Airlines will reveal its all-new Airbus A380 first-class suites and business-class seats on November 2 at a media launch in Singapore, Australian Business Traveller reports. The airline had originally planned for the revamped A380 to take flight in October, to mark the 10th anniversary of the world’s first superjumbo commercial flight, which was with Singapore Airlines. However, it may not begin flying until March 2018, according to an earlier report by Australian Business Traveller.

PVG Introduces Carry-On Luggage Checkpoints

Travelers departing from Shanghai Pudong International Airport will encounter carry-on luggage checkpoints starting today. Those with oversize or overweight bags will have to return to the airline counters to have them checked. “Oversize luggage could make overhead lockers open unexpectedly during flights and cause safety concerns,” Shanghai Airport Authority said.

Inmarsat VP Says In-Flight Wi-Fi Unlikely to Replace Seatback Screens

According to Otto Gergye, Inmarsat’s vice-president for Asia Pacific, the benefits of in-flight connectivity are not substantial enough to replace seatback screens. “At the moment you can put 500 movies onto an airplane in something that’s smaller than a shoebox, and the passenger has the same experience,” Gergye said. “So is that really what you would be using the satellite connectivity for?” However, he does believe that reliable, fast in-flight Wi-Fi is becoming an increasingly essential offering.

Aer Lingus Launches Unbundled Saver Fare

Aer Lingus is making a push for the low-cost market with nonstop, transatlantic flights to Ireland through Saver Fare, which is exclusive to aerlingus.com. Saver Fare includes one piece of 22-pound cabin luggage, in-flight entertainment and an onboard meal. Checked baggage, seat selection, a blanket and headphones, which all come with the airline’s Smart Fare, will cost extra. “There is not a one-size-fits-all for today's traveler,” Aer Lingus COO Mike Rutter said. “[We recognize] the desire for some travelers to go à la carte, book their flight and choose any additional extras should they so wish.”

APEX ORIGINAL: ChillTravel Has Luggage Tracking Ideas Under Wraps

Uruguayan startup ChillTravel is planning to launch two new products that will allow travelers to track their belongings. The company’s Chill Tracker uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to ensure the recovery of forgotten items, such as wallets, tablets and passports, in airports and airplanes. The startup’s other product, Chill Wrap, is a luggage skin infused with BLE technology, so travelers can keep tabs on the location of their checked bags. According to Jeronimo Acosta, ChillTravel’s founder and CEO, Chill Wrap will be “cheaper than the traditional plastic wrapping system sold at the airport.”
