UTC to Buy Rockwell Collins for $30 Billion

United Technologies Corporation (UTC) has reached an agreement to buy Rockwell Collins for $30 billion, valued at $140 per share. The deal is expected to close by the third quarter of 2018, subject to approval by Rockwell Collins shareholders and regulatory authorities. Once completed, Rockwell Collins and UTC Aerospace Systems will be integrated to form a new business unit called Collins Aerospace Systems.

Airbus Signs €500-Million Deal With FACC for A320 Airspace Overhead Storage

Airbus has signed a €500-million agreement with FACC for the delivery of overhead stowage compartments and ceiling panels for A320 Airspace interiors. Under the terms of the contract, FACC will develop the Airspace XL Bins in cooperation with Airbus. Production is scheduled to start in 2018 for what Airbus claims will be the largest overhead stowage compartments in the category of short- and medium-haul aircraft.

Virgin Atlantic Completes Fleet-Wide In-Flight Connectivity Installations

Virgin Atlantic has become the first European carrier to offer in-flight Wi-Fi across its entire fleet. The airline’s 39 Boeing 787s, 747s, Airbus A330s and A340s are equipped with a combination of  Panasonic and Gogo technology. The airline offers a 40 MB data package, providing passengers with one hour of internet access, or a 150 MB option that lasts for the duration of a flight.

Bin There, Sanitized That: “Self-Cleaning” Airport Security Bins Rolled Out at CAK

Ohio’s Akron-Canton Airport is claiming a first among the world’s airports with the launch of self-cleaning security bins last week, sponsored by Western Reserve Hospital and developed by NanoTouch Materials. The handles and bases of the containers are covered in specially designed NanoSeptic skins that contain mineral nano-crystals, which create a self-cleaning oxidation reaction that's stronger than bleach, continuously breaking down organic contaminants.

BA Launches Airside Car Service for Passengers With Tight Connections

British Airways is launching a new service to help passengers at risk of missing their connecting flights at London’s Heathrow Airport. Called Premium Transfer Drive, the service applies to business-class customers traveling on a UK domestic flight, connecting to either a short-haul or long-haul flight. BA’s team at Heathrow will track these passengers and provide an airside car transfer between one flight and the next if they are at risk of missing their flight.

Delta and LSTN Make Loud Statement With Silent Disco

European Commission Approves Bridging Loan to Airberlin

The European Commission has approved Germany’s plans to provide a €150-million bridge loan to airberlin. The financing, provided by German public credit institution KfW, will be paid in installments. The European Union’s antitrust regulator granted the loan so airberlin can continue operating while it concludes negotiations to sell its assets. After this, the airline will either need to repay the loan or be wound down.
