El Al Selects ViaSat for In-Flight Connectivity on Dreamliner Fleet

El Al has selected ViaSat’s Ka-band in-flight connectivity system to deliver onboard Wi-Fi on its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet. The 16 wide-body aircraft will connect to ViaSat-2, which will be the world’s highest capacity communications satellite when it enters service in early 2018. Don Buchman, vice-president and general manager for Commercial Mobility at ViaSat, said ViaSat-2 will give “complete access to fast and reliable internet across [El Al’s] flight routes from North America to Tel Aviv."

Austrian Airlines Releases Details of Upcoming Premium Economy

Austrian Airlines has unveiled details of its new premium economy product, which will be first retrofitted on one of its Boeing 767s. The upcoming cabin class represents a €15-million investment, which includes more comfortable seats with 38 inches of pitch and a 40-degree recline, 12-inch in-flight entertainment seatback displays and enhanced onboard catering.

United Customers Can Now Check In Using Amazon Alexa

United Airlines has developed a new Amazon Alexa skill allowing customers to check in, receive flight status updates and access information about onboard amenities. Through voice interaction, customers can ask questions such as, “Alexa, ask United what is the status of my flight?” The airline is the first in the US to offer services via Alexa-enabled devices such the Amazon Echo and the Amazon Echo Dot.

More Than 95% Of Airlines and Airports Intend to Invest in Cybersecurity Over Next Three Years

Cybersecurity, cloud services and passenger self-service are identified as the air transport industry's top three information technology (IT) priorities in SITA's 2017 Air Transport IT Trends Insights. According to the report, which was released today, airlines’ IT spending will rise to an estimated 3.30% or $24.3 billion in 2017; for airports, the rise is expected to reach 5.05% or $8.43 billion. Cybersecurity tops that, with 95% of airlines and 96% of airports intending to invest in major programs or R&D on cybersecurity initiatives over the next three years.

Ryanair Cuts Carry-On Allowance and Checked Bag Fees

Ryanair has announced it will increase its check-in baggage allowance from 15 kg to 20 kg and reduce the fee from €35 to €25. The airline said it was making the move because its current policy of allowing two free carry-on bags has resulted in a lack of overhead storage space, causing boarding and flight delays. “These bag policy changes will cost Ryanair over €50 million per annum in reduced checked bag fees,” said Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer.

KLM to Offer Check-Ins and Boarding Passes Via WhatsApp

KLM announced yesterday that it has become the first airline to join the WhatsApp Business platform. Customers flying with the Dutch carrier will be able to receive booking confirmations, check-in notifications, boarding passes and flight status updates via WhatsApp. KLM will also use the service to respond to customer questions in 10 different languages.
