Florida Airports Begin Counting Cost of Irma

Airports in South Florida are beginning to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Irma. Flights from airports serving Orlando, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale remain grounded, but Miami International Airport said it hopes to resume a limited schedule on Tuesday. Airlines have canceled more than 13,100 flights since Irma first began, according to FlightAware, with 9,483 of these in Florida alone.

Lufthansa Systems Looks to Pair BoardConnect IFE With Iridium NEXT

Lufthansa Systems is planning to pair its BoardConnect Portable in-flight entertainment platform with low-bandwidth connectivity delivered by Iridium NEXT satellites. Jan-Peter Gaense, Lufthansa Systems’ director of Project and Certification, said the combination of the wireless IFE solution and Iridium NEXT could be appealing to smaller airlines wishing to put their “toe in the water” with in-flight connectivity.

Japan Airlines and TripAdvisor Partner for Rural Tourism Initiative

Japan Airlines has announced a partnership with TripAdvisor to support international tourism to Japan. Launching in October, the initiative involves a multimedia online portal called Untold Stories of Japan, which will feature the Tohoku, Kyushu and Okinawa and cities close to the Kanto region. “What we will create together is a powerful platform that can help drive a revitalization of rural Japan,” said Yoshiharu Ueki, president of Japan Airlines.

Inmarsat’s EAN Satellite Ready for Commercial Use

Inmarsat confirmed its European Aviation satellite successfully completed its in-orbit tests, following its launch in June. The satellite is ready to support in-flight connectivity services when the European Aviation Network (EAN) launches later this year. Inmarsat also said Deutsche Telekom, its EAN partner, is in the advanced stages of constructing the complementary cellular ground network stations.

Formia Unveils Luxury Amenity Kits for Air Astana

Formia has expanded its relationship with Air Astana to supply amenity kits for business-class passengers on both long- and short-haul flights. The deal includes tie-ups with luxury brands, Christian Lacroix and Furla. The Christian Lacroix bags will feature the company’s signature butterfly pattern, while the Furla bags will come in the form of a miniature version of the brand’s handbags.
