SkyLights Unveils New AlloSky Headset and Slew of Airline and Content Partnerships

SkyLights will unveil its second-generation immersive cinema headset at APEX EXPO in Long Beach, California, tomorrow. The headset, called AlloSky, resembles a sleek pair of aviator sunglasses and comes with fresh content deals signed with Warner Brothers, National Geographic, Lionsgate and BBC. Airline launch partners for the in-flight entertainment solution include Air France, Joon, Corsair and Jetfly, in addition to partnerships with gategroup and Accor Hotels.

Netflix Inflight 2.0: Video Streaming With Playback Metrics

Netflix today announced it will offer encodes to airlines, with the intention of providing better insight into buffering times during flight. “We’ll be able to monitor our video playback metrics to ensure [passengers] have the greatest experience on your flight,” said Spencer Wang, vice-president, Finance and Investor Relations at Netflix, during his presentation at APEX EXPO’s Education Day. “By partnering with us, this will result in significant bandwidth savings for carriers.”

Global Eagle Signs Worldwide Content Distribution Agreement With Time Inc.

Global Eagle has signed a worldwide distribution agreement with Time Inc. to bring programming under the newly created “TIME Flies” brand to airline, cruise and maritime markets. TIME’s 100 Photos: The Most Influential Images of All Time and Emmy-nominated series A Year In Space will be the first shows featured in Global Eagle’s content portfolio as part of the agreement.

Trump Unveils New Travel Ban

President Donald Trump signed a proclamation on Sunday restricting travel for citizens of nine countries. The new rules are scheduled to come into effect on October 18 and will replace the expiring travel ban. The new measures will affect Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Syria and Yemen. A suspension of non-immigrant visas to citizens for Venezuela will apply only to certain government officials and their immediate families.

[PHOTOS] Smurfs Up: Brussels Airlines Chooses Its Next Belgian Icon Livery

Brussels Airlines will feature characters from the Smurfs cartoon on the design of its fifth special aircraft livery. The design is the work of Italian student Marta Mascellani and was selected as the winning entry of the airline’s Belgian Icon design contest, which was open to the public. The Belgian comic franchise’s small, blue anthropomorphous creatures will be featured on an Airbus A320 as of March 2018.

DOT Fully Grants Foreign Air Permit to Norwegian UK

The US Department of Transportation has granted a full foreign air permit to Norwegian’s UK subsidiary. The low-cost carrier set up Gatwick-based Norwegian UK in 2015 to benefit from the EU’s Open Skies agreement with the US. The DOT’s approval comes despite vocal objections mainly from US flight crew unions focused on Norwegian’s labor practices. “The labor parties have offered no arguments not already considered, and rejected,” the DOT said.

Emirates Launches Oktoberfest Menu on Flights to Germany

Emirates has introduced a special menu to celebrate Oktoberfest on board flights between destinations in Germany and Hong Kong via Dubai. The menu is available until October 3 and will include dishes such as roast chicken and spaetzle with a mushroom sauce in economy class, while rock-salt pretzels with cheese and sweet mustard dips, sandwiches and pretzel rolls with cold-cut turkey will be available to business- and first-class passengers. The airline will also serve Paulaner beer for the duration of the festival.
