Air Europa to Launch wIFE From Lufthansa Systems, Lufthansa Technik and Epteca

Air Europa announced it will install a new wireless in-flight entertainment system developed by Lufthansa Systems and Lufthansa Technik. The solution is based on the BoardConnect 5.0 digital platform and also integrates an ancillary revenue developed by Epteca, a contextual marketing agency. “The open architecture of the digital BoardConnect platform and seamless integration with Epteca personalized ancillary offerings makes it exactly the right choice for us,” said Alexis Capdevila, in-flight entertainment manager at Air Europa.

ViaSat Brings Wireless IFE on Board Tigerair Australia

Tigerair Australia has selected ViaSat’s in-flight entertainment solution for all domestic flights. Using the airline’s app or a web browser, passengers will be able to access Hollywood movies and television shows, on a pay-per-view basis, on their own devices – including programming from Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation and Fox Networks Group. This is the first time ViaSat will deploy an IFE solution since its acquisition of Arconics last year.

Etihad Names Tony Douglas as Replacement for James Hogan

Etihad Airways has named Tony Douglas as its new group CEO, succeeding James Hogan in the role. Douglas will join Etihad in January 2018 after stepping down from his current role at the UK’s Ministry of Defence, where he been responsible for procuring and supporting equipment and services for the British Armed Forces. Before that, Douglas held CEO roles at the Abu Dhabi Airports Company and the Abu Dhabi Ports Company.

[VIDEO] West Entertainment Introduces WE by West

West Entertainment yesterday announced at APEX EXPO a content management system that gives airlines more control over the purchasing of in-flight entertainment. The platform enables airlines to select monthly programming and view the status of file deliveries and payment. “We want to give the power back to the studios, and the power back to the airlines, to make their own deal,” said Kate Groth, vice-president of Content and Client Services, West Entertainment. “And of course we help facilitate those as well.”

Level Targets Millennials With Onboard Retail Systems Pair and Pay

Level, a low-cost carrier of International Airlines Group (IAG), has introduced an onboard payment system called Pair and Pay, which enables passengers to pay for food, drinks, Wi-Fi, amenity kits and duty-free goods by pairing their mobile devices to the seatback in-flight entertainment system. “It’s well understood that users prefer their personal device to enter private information,” said Derek Ellis, chief creative officer and co-founder of Massive, who worked with IAG and Black Swan to develop the software.

Air France to Retrofit Its Airbus A380 Fleet

Air France announced it will retrofit its Airbus A380 fleet. Air France-KLM CEO Jean-Marc Janaillac said work on the refurbishment is scheduled to begin in 2020 but that the design and configuration has not yet been decided. According to French newspaper Les Echos, the total cost of the retrofits will be around 200 million euros for 10 A380s.

Ryanair No Longer in the Running for Alitalia

Ryanair said it is no longer interested in acquiring Alitalia, and is instead focusing on solving its pilot shortage, which led to mass flight cancellations, affecting 715,000 passengers in recent weeks. “In order to focus on repairing this rostering problem this winter, Ryanair will eliminate all management distractions starting with its interest in Alitalia,” said Ryanair.
