Bombardier Wins Record Q400 Order From SpiceJet

Bombardier has just announced a record order for 50 Q400 aircraft, worth $1.7 billion, from low-cost carrier SpiceJet. The agreement includes 25 Q400s with purchase rights for an additional 25. The aircraft will be fit with 90 seats, instead of the 78 in the existing seat configuration. The new turboprops will join SpiceJet’s fleet of 20 Q400s and 34 Boeing 737 aircraft.

Sky High Economics: In-Flight Broadband, a $130B Market by 2035

Inmarsat and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) have released a first-of-its-kind research study quantifying the economic impact of connectivity on the global airline industry. Sky High Economics: Quantifying the Commercial Opportunities of Passenger Connectivity for the Global Airline Industry predicts significant growth in broadband-enabled e-commerce, advertising and premium content revenue in the sky. By 2035, the study concludes that airlines’ share of ancillary revenue will be $30 billion, growing from $1 billion in 2018.

Air Inuit Selects Bluebox Wow Portable Wireless IFE System

Air Inuit passengers will soon be able to stream content via Bluebox Aviation Systems’ portable wireless IFE system on the airline’s fleet of Boeing 737s and Bombardier Dash 8s. Each Bluebox Wow unit can provide 15 hours of streamed content to 50 passengers. Bluebox Wow has been approved for late-window streaming content by five major Hollywood studios.

Elon Musk Unveils Spacecraft That Doubles as High-Speed Intercity Transportation

Elon Musk has unveiled BFR, a spacecraft that can carry 150 tons of cargo and shrink the length of a trip from Bangkok to Dubai (a six-hour-17-minute flight) to just 27 minutes. “If we’re building this thing to go to the moon and Mars, why not go to other places as well?” Musk said at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, where the news was announced.

JetBlue and Samuel Adams to Host In-Flight Beer-Tasting Event

Samuel Adams will host an in-flight beer tasting event at 35,000 feet on October 5, for passengers flying to attend the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The Boston brewery is partnering with JetBlue for the event, which will take place on board Flight 97, departing from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Denver International Airport. Beers served during the flight will include Samuel Adams' OctoberFest and additional unnamed beers.

American Airlines to Create Sleeping Products in Partnership With Casper

American Airlines has announced a partnership with Casper to create eight new in-flight sleeping products. Starting in December, passengers in premium economy, business and first class will be offered a mattress pad that fits over their seat, regular and lumbar pillows, a pillowcase, a duvet, a blanket, pajamas and slippers.

IFPL’s USB Solution Eases Transition From Type A to C

IFPL displayed a reversible USB combination outlet at APEX EXPO in Long Beach, California, to help airlines transition from USB Type A to Type C, which is gradually becoming the standard for USB power. USB-C can provide up to 100 watts of power, but the aviation industry is considering limiting that to 60 watts on an aircraft. “However, this has the ability to charge more hungry devices like laptops,” said David Thomas, IFPL’s vice-president of Business Development.
