Lufthansa Technik Signs Chinese Connectivity MoU With Air Esurfing

Lufthansa Technik has signed a memorandum of understanding with communications company Air Esurfing, to provide in-flight connectivity services on Chinese airlines. The MoU is the first step toward both companies collaborating on Ku- and Ka-band antennae installations on board Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 family aircraft. "We feel very privileged signing the first agreement ever with a Chinese provider,” said Lukas Bucher, head of Connectivity at Lufthansa Technik.

First Boeing 787-10 Rolls Out of Assembly Line for Launch Customer SIA

Boeing has rolled out the first 787-10 aircraft from its final assembly plant in South Carolina. Singapore Airlines will be the global launch customer for the longest Dreamliner variant, with 30 787-10s on order and a signed letter of intent for 19 more. The Asia-Pacific carrier plans to deploy the aircraft on its medium-haul routes after an expected delivery date some time within the first half of next year.

Airbus’ Award-Winning Concepts Address Aircraft Cabin Waste Problem

Airbus is looking to improve in-flight cabin waste management with its recent Crystal Cabin Award-winning concepts. The Mobile Vacuum Trash Compactor (MVTC) was developed with the Hamburg University of Applied Science and placed first in the “University” category in 2015, while the Retrolley, which was developed with 3D Systems, won this year's “Greener Cabin” category. Since receiving the accolades, Airbus has continued development of the MVTC and Retrolley using internal innovation resources, like Airbus Bizlab, and shown the concepts to more than 20 airlines.

[PHOTOS] SilkAir Unveils Boeing 737 MAX 8 Interior

SilkAir has unveiled the cabin interiors on board its new Boeing 737 MAX 8, with the first aircraft scheduled to begin flying next week. The new single-aisle aircraft are configured with 12 leather business-class seats offering 49 inches of pitch and 12 inches of recline. The 144 economy-class seats each come with a seatback holder for personal devices and USB sockets. Neither cabin offers seatback screens, with the airline instead offering wireless entertainment through its SilkAir Studio system.

Poolside PaxEx: Punta Cana’s Airport Will Invite Passengers for a Pre-Flight Swim

The Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana International Airport is building a new VIP lounge with an outdoor swimming pool overlooking its runways. Designed by local architect Antonio Segundo Imbert, the outdoor area will allow travelers to swim or sunbathe right up until boarding time with a poolside view of parked aircraft. The lounge is scheduled to open in December with a $125-per-person entry fee.

United Airlines Has Launched America’s Shortest Commercial Flight

United Airlines has launched America’s shortest commercial flight, with a flying time of just 16 minutes. The route connects San Francisco to Santa Rosa, a small city located 60 miles north and is operated once daily by SkyWest Airlines on behalf of United. Once accounting for taxiing before takeoff and before landing, the journey time nearly triples to 45 minutes, meaning passengers spend more time on the ground than in the air.

SIA Partners With Southeast Asian Ride-Hailing App

Singapore Airlines has partnered with Grab, a ride-hailing app, to allow passengers to book airport transfers through its own app. SIA customers can now book Grab rides through the SingaporeAir mobile app ahead of their scheduled flight at six airports in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Both companies will also integrate one another’s loyalty programs so accrued points can be converted for flights or transfers.
