APEX ORIGINAL: Airbus A330neo First Flight Completed Successfully

The Airbus A330neo took flight for the first time today in Toulouse, France. The latest generation of Airbus’ twin-aisle, midsized mainstay will fly only with the Airspace by Airbus cabin interior and promises 10-15% lower costs per seat-mile to airline operators. Other improvements include a boarding area with LED lighting and a quieter cabin. TAP Air Portugal is set to receive the first A330neo at the end of this year or early 2018.

Inmarsat Joins International Aviation Cybersecurity Association

Inmarsat has joined the Aviation Information Sharing and Analysis Center (A-ISAC), an international association for sharing cybersecurity information targeted at the aviation sector. “Companies can no longer operate as separate entities to keep pace with the constantly changing cybersecurity landscape,” said Joseph Teixeira, Inmarsat’s VP, Aviation Safety and Cybersecurity.

Embraer Will Deliver First E190-E2 in April 2018 to Launch Customer Widerøe

Embraer announced it will deliver the first E190-E2 regional jet to launch customer Widerøe in April 2018. The Norwegian airline, which is the largest regional carrier in the Nordic countries, signed a contract with Embraer for up to 15 E2 jets and purchase rights for 12 additional aircraft. “Since the program was launched, the first half of 2018 has been our target, and now we are making good on this commitment,” said John Slattery, president and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation.

Big Airports Are Getting Busier, But Smaller Ones Are Struggling

The world’s biggest airports experienced passenger growth of 5.5% last year, but traffic declined at one in four airports that handle less than a million passengers annually, according to Airports Council International (ACI). “The downside of airline capacity shifts is that a proportion of smaller regional airports have either stagnated or experienced a reduction in nonstop destinations between cities,” said Angela Gittens, director general of ACI World.

AeroMobile Selects Astellia to Monitor In-Flight Mobile Network Performance

AeroMobile has selected Astellia, a network analytics firm, to monitor the quality of its in-flight mobile services. The collaboration will allow the Panasonic Avionics subsidiary to provide customized dashboards based on Astellia’s big data architecture to identify potential issues before they affect subscribers. “We will extract great value from Astellia’s solution … assessing service performance more quickly and efficiently than we can do today,” said Kevin Rogers, AeroMobile CEO.

SATS to Provide In-Flight Catering for Turkish Airlines

SATS announced it will invest in an in-flight catering company based in Turkey. The decision comes after the Singapore-based company signed a memorandum of agreement with Turkish Airlines that will allow its wholly-owned subsidiary SATS Investments to provide in-flight catering services to Istanbul New Airport.

Thomas Cook Group to Launch Mallorca-Based Airline

Thomas Cook Group will launch a new airline based on the Spanish island of Mallorca, with plans to begin flights early next year. The new airline, called Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics, will operate a fleet of three Airbus A320s. “With this new airline, we can adjust seasonal changes, do cost-effective planning and offer more destinations,” said Thomas Cook Group chief airlines officer Christoph Debus.
