Gogo Successfully Conducts First Test Flight of Its New ATG Network

Gogo today announced it successfully conducted its first test flight and rollout of its new North American regional Air-to-Ground (ATG) in-flight network, called ATG-NG. Gogo claims the ATG-NG network, when combined with its proprietary aero antenna and in-cabin network and software platform, is capable of delivering 30 times more bandwidth to an aircraft than its previous ATG solution. Once network upgrades are complete, Gogo says it will deliver performance comparable to its 2Ku global satellite solution.

SpiceJet Looks to STG Aerospace for Cabin Light Retrofits

SpiceJet has chosen STG Aerospace as the partner for its cabin lighting retrofit program. India’s third largest carrier will upgrade its fleet of Boeing 737s with STG Aerospace’s liTeMood LED aftermarket ambient lighting solution. SpiceJet has used STG Aerospace’s saf-Tglo photoluminescent floor-path marking system since 2005. “SpiceJet’s decision to install our liTeMood LED lighting system will help us to take full advantage of the rapidly growing retrofit market in India,” said Marcus Williams, STG Aerospace’s director of Global Sales and Marketing.

Air France Revamps Its Mobile IFE App

Air France has updated its iOS and Android in-flight entertainment app. Called Air France Play, the app smartphone and tablet app offers content including newspapers, magazines, videos and music. Customers can access the content up to 30 hours before flights that are two hours or longer between France and Europe, North Africa or Israel, and routes within its regional Caribbean network.

EgyptAir Express to Acquire Bombardier C Series Aircraft?

EgyptAir has decided to order 12 Bombardier C Series aircraft to replace its EgyptAir Express regional unit’s Embraer E-170 fleet, according to Daily News Egypt. Citing unnamed sources, the newspaper said Egypt’s flag carrier will acquire the 130-seat stretched CS300 variant and will put its E-170s up for sale. However, Daily News Egypt did not say whether the CS300s would be acquired directly from Bombardier or via a third-party lessor.

Finnair to Weigh Passengers at Helsinki Airport on Voluntary Basis

Finnair announced yesterday it will begin weighing passengers on a voluntary basis at Helsinki Airport. The airline said the scales will be placed close to departure gates to anonymously weigh between 100 and 150 travelers, along with their carry-on baggage. The data will be used to more accurately calculate an aircraft's weight and balance. “We want to make sure we have the best possible data at our disposal,” said Sami Suokas, Finnair’s manager of Customer Processes.

Turkish Airline Launches Istanbul Layover Boat Tour for Business-Class Passengers

Turkish Airlines has launched a layover tour program for its business-class passengers transiting through Istanbul. The Istanbul Bosphorus Experience is led by a local guide and includes a private boat tour on the Bosphorus, where travelers are offered drinks and snacks, followed by either a breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Çırağan Palace Kempinski Hotel. The excursion can be purchased by travelers with transfer times of seven hours or longer in Turkey’s largest city.
