digEcor revealed at Future Travel Experience Asia in Singapore that it has appointed former Panasonic Avionics CEO and president Paul Margis as non-executive chairman of its board of directors. “He’s one of the founding fathers of the industry, so to have him on the team is fantastic,” digEcor CEO David Withers said, adding that Margis’ extensive experience and network will be beneficial to furthering digEcor’s product and client portfolio.

Emirates’ New Boeing 777 First Class to Debut in Europe in December

Emirates’ updated first-class product will launch on two Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, operating from Dubai to Belgium and Switzerland, beginning December 1. The cabin will feature six private suites laid out in a 1-1-1 layout, compared with the eight private suites in a 1-2-1 layout on its existing 777 fleet. The first Emirates aircraft to feature the new private suites will be on display at the Dubai Airshow next week.

Airbus Americas Names Next CEO

C. Jeffrey Knittel will join Airbus on January 12, 2018, as chairman and CEO of Airbus Americas. Knittel has more than 25 years of global aerospace leadership experience, formerly serving as chief executive of C2 Aviation Capital and president of CIT Transportation Finance. Airbus Americas’ current CEO, Barry Eccleston, will retire on February 28, 2018.

AirFi Wireless IFE Propels Samoa Airways Toward Modernization

Samoa Airways has selected AirFi’s wireless in-flight entertainment solution for a Boeing 737-800 aircraft that will serve Auckland and Sydney from Faleolo International Airport. According to the airline’s CEO, Alvin Tuala, IFE streaming will help to reinvigorate its passenger experience as it relaunches its operations later this month. “Mobile devices are an essential part of our lives, and naturally, our customers want to connect when on board to stream entertainment and travel information,” he said.

ViaSat Signs Ka-Band Satellite Connectivity Agreement With ESA

ViaSat and the European Space Agency have formed a public-private partnership called Project AIDAN to develop “key components” of its ViaSat-3 communications system. The agreement will involve the development of broadband satellite user terminals, including a fully electronic phased array for in-flight connectivity applications across the European continent. According to some analysts, the cost-sharing deal is one of several ways ViaSat is seeking to skirt opposition to its European satellite broadband plans.

Lufthansa Systems to Help Scout Startups for El Al’s Cockpit Innovation Fund

Lufthansa Systems will play a major role in selecting startups to cooperate with Cockpit Innovation, EL AL Israel Airlines’ high-tech investment arm. As part of the partnership, experts from the airline IT provider will work with the startups on relevant developments in fields like artificial intelligence, big data and fintech (financial technology). Routier, BidFlyer and 30SecondsToFly are among the seven companies that Cockpit Innovation has invested in so far.

IAG Frequent Flyer Program Avios Moves Toward Dynamic Pricing

IAG announced yesterday that its frequent flyer program, Avios, will introduce dynamic pricing next year. According to Business Traveller, the change could mean members would pay a varying number of Avios for flight redemptions, depending on demand. The current pricing model involves set peak and off-peak rates depending on the date of flight, with two-thirds of the year being off-peak.
