Airbus and Boeing Seal Record-Breaking Narrow-Body Jet Deals at Dubai Airshow

Airbus has secured what is believed to be the biggest-ever aircraft deal in history. US investment group Indigo Partners placed an order for 430 narrow-body jets consisting of 273 A320neos and 157 A321neos, worth up to $49.5 billion at list prices. Boeing responded by announcing that flydubai had placed an order for 175 737 MAXs, plus options for a further 50 aircraft, in a deal that could be worth up to $27 billion at catalog prices.

Saudia Picks Panasonic X Series for 35 More Aircraft

Saudi Arabian Airlines signed a deal with Panasonic Avionics to equip in-flight entertainment systems on 35 aircraft in its short-haul fleet. The airline has selected Panasonic’s eXO overhead entertainment system to be linefit across 20 Airbus A320neos and 15 A321neos. This latest order follows the airline’s decision to install Panasonic's eX1 IFE systems on its existing fleet of seven A320 aircraft and the selection of Panasonic's eXO hybrid IFE system for its future fleet of 30 Airbus A320neo aircraft.

Emirates Partners With Thales for Inmarsat GX on 777X

Emirates has selected Thales to deliver next-generation in-flight broadband connectivity on its Boeing 777X fleet using Inmarsat’s GX satellite network. The Gulf carrier, which already signed a deal to equip its 777Xs with Thales’ AVANT in-flight entertainment system, said the new deal will give passengers best-in-class connectivity on the upcoming fleet of 150 aircraft, which are scheduled for delivery starting in 2020.

EgyptAir Signs LOI for Up to 24 Bombardier CS300s

EgyptAir signed a letter of intent (LOI) with Bombardier for up to 24 C Series aircraft at the 2017 Dubai Airshow yesterday. The agreement includes 12 CS300 jets with purchase rights for an additional 12, worth a combined total of $2.2 billion at list prices. Safwat Musallam, chairman and CEO of EgyptAir Holding Company, said the fleet would be flown under the EgyptAir Express regional carrier brand and would be used to serve domestic and regional routes, as well as some European destinations.

SWISS Adds Media Carrier’s Digital Publications to Lounges at Zurich and Geneva Airports

A selection of 430 Swiss and international digital newspapers and magazines are now available for travelers to download in 10 of Swiss International Air Lines’ lounges at Zurich and Geneva airports. The digital titles are being offered through SWISS’ existing partnership with Media Carrier, which launched in early 2017. Passengers have been able to download digital publications to personal devices during flights via the company’s Media Box web-based platform – now they can also do so in SWISS lounges, before flying.

IATA Calls on Aviation Industry to Heed Lessons From In-Flight Electronics Bans

IATA has called on the aviation industry to learn lessons from the in-flight electronics bans implemented by the US and UK earlier this year. Speaking at IATA AVSEC World Conference in Abu Dhabi, the industry association’s director general and CEO, Alexandre de Juniac, said aviation security could be strengthened through closer government-to-government cooperation, global adoption of universal standards, improved information sharing between governments and industry, and efficient implementation of new and existing technologies.

Kuwait-Based Wataniya Airways Signs MoU for 25 Airbus A320neos

Airbus struck its first deal at the 2017 Dubai Airshow yesterday after Wataniya Airways’ aircraft provider Golden Falcon Aviation signed a memorandum of understanding for 25 A320neos. In July 2017, the Kuwaiti carrier announced it was planning to relaunch, having previously ceased operations in 2011 after experiencing financial difficulties. Wataniya’s chairman, Ali Al Fouzan, said the fleet of A320neos will offer the airline’s customers “the most comfortable and modern cabins … while ensuring profitability and efficiency.”
