ViaSat-2 Reaches Geostationary Orbit

Viasat announced that its ViaSat-2 satellite has transitioned into normal orbit after it successfully reached geostationary orbit. The company said it has now started testing the Ka-band satellite ahead of its expected entry into service in February 2018. “This is a great achievement for the Viasat team, our customers and our partners,” said Mark Dankberg, Viasat’s chairman and CEO.

KIDZinflight to Bring Augmented Reality to Kids’ IFE

KIDZinflight has partnered with Zappar to bring augmented reality (AR) to children’s in-flight entertainment. The Zappar app recognizes images and objects through a mobile device’s camera and uses AR technology to bring them to life. “To meet the kids of today who have grown up in an electronic world, KIDZinflight now offers to combine the world of classic 3-D activities with the electronic world,” said a spokesperson for KIDZinflight. “AR adds a new dimension to classic kids’ onboard activities.”

Expedia and Routehappy Aim to Make Flight Booking Align With Hotel Reservation Experience

Expedia will enrich flight shopping results for millions of consumers by expanding its agreement with Routehappy. Expedia’s travel brands, such as Orbitz, trivago and Travelocity, will integrate Routehappy Hub UPAs (Universal Product Attributes) and UTAs (Universal Ticket Attributes) into its flight search results, in addition to the score and amenity information that it already displays via Routehappy Hub’s API. This might include photos, videos and at-a-glance views of what’s included in the fare,” David Krieger, senior director at Expedia. told APEX Media.

EasyJet to Compete With Lufthansa on German Domestic Routes

EasyJet will go head-to-head with Lufthansa Group, competing on domestic German routes from Berlin next month. The low-cost carrier already flies from Berlin Schoenefeld Airport to destinations outside Germany, but its deal to acquire some airberlin assets will see it move into the larger inner-city Tegel Airport. Starting January 5, easyJet will launch routes from Tegel to Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart, in addition to 15 international destinations.

Unruly Passenger Incidents Have Become Fewer, But More Severe

Speaking at the IATA Media Day in Geneva, Tim Coleman, the association’s assistant director, External Affairs, shared the recent statistics from IATA’s 2016 Safety Trend Evaluation, Analysis and Data Exchange System (STEADES). The rate of incidents in 2016 decreased, compared to 2015, with one incident for every 1,434 flights in 2016 versus one in every 1,205 flights during 2015. However, Level 2 incidents – which include physical assault, obscene behavior, verbal threats, harassment and tampering with emergency or safety systems on board – increased from 11% of total unruly incidents in 2015, to 12% in 2016.

Emirates Partners With Spotify for Destination-Based Playlists

Emirates has launched an interactive campaign in partnership with Spotify and Havas Media to help Australian travelers find international destinations that align with their musical tastes. The “True North” microsite takes a Spotify user’s listening history and uses a custom algorithm to match them to one of 12 destinations from Emirates’ global network, including Glasgow, Singapore and Madrid. Users will also receive a customized Spotify playlist based on the destination as well as a guide curated by locals.

Expect a Busy Christmas Air Travel Season for US Carriers

More Americans will take to the skies this Christmas holiday period, with a 3.5% increase in passenger numbers compared to the same time last year. During the 21-day holiday travel season, 51 million passengers are expected to fly with US-based carriers, and the busiest travel days are expected to be December 21, 22 and 26, according to Airlines for America (A4A).
