Lufthansa Group to Move Frequent Flyer Scheme to Revenue-Based Earning

Lufthansa announced it will move its Miles & More frequent flyer program to a revenue-based scheme. Starting in March 2018, the number of miles earned on Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian Airlines flights will be based on the price of an airfare paid in euros, which will then be multiplied by a number between four and six to determine the total miles awarded. Lufthansa says the revised formula will reward “the purchase of higher-priced tickets more strongly than is currently the case.”

AirPortr and American Airlines Team Up to Reduce Bag Drop Congestion

American Airlines has partnered with London-based AirPortr to offer mobile luggage check-in services to customers flying from Heathrow Airport to the US. AirPortr’s CEO, Randel Darby, said the partnership means the company “can serve more customers and takes us one step further in establishing mobile luggage check-in as a new standard in the air travel experience.”

Lufthansa Technik Selects Inside Secure to Bolster DRM for IFE Content

Lufthansa Technik announced it is working with Inside Secure, an IT security services firm, to ensure content on its nicemedia and nice HD wireless in-flight entertainment systems can be securely streamed to its iOS and Android apps without the risk of video piracy. Lufthansa Technik will use Inside Secure’s Content Protection Client, which combines digital rights management code protection and media decoder technology.

Winter Storm Affects Major Airports Across Europe

Air travelers across western Europe faced disruptions after a winter storm resulted in canceled flights at several hub airports over the weekend. Cancellations and delays affected airports in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. As many as 330 flights from London’s Heathrow Airport were canceled, affecting more than 50,000 travelers, according to FlightAware.

Etihad Introduces Buy-on-Board Drinks and Snacks

Etihad Airways has introduced a selection of buy-on-board snacks and beverages on certain routes, in addition to the airline’s existing complimentary items. Economy-class passengers on flights to and from London, Paris and all Australian destinations can purchase cold brew coffee, while passengers on all non-US long-haul and ultra-long-haul services can buy glasses of Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Brut NV champagne. Snack boxes and Christian Lacroix male or female amenity kits will be available on all non-US ultra long-haul routes.

Ryanair and Amadeus to End GDS Partnership

Ryanair will end its global distribution system partnership with Amadeus on December 15, after both parties failed to reach an agreement to renew the partnership. The Irish low-cost carrier said it will continue to service travel agents through its deals with Travelport and Sabre. However, Ryanair will continue to work with Amadeus through Navitaire, its subsidiary, as a customer of Navitaire New Skies.

JetBlue’s Holiday Amenity Kits Are Inspired by Hollywood Royalty

JetBlue’s Mint passengers will receive limited-edition amenity kits throughout December. The result of a collaboration between Hayward & Hopper and CLIP, the kits contain socks, personal care items, a dental kit, eyeshades, a pen and earplugs. Marin Hopper, the daughter of Hollywood stars Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward and founder of Hayward & Hopper, said memories of her parents were the inspiration for the latest JetBlue amenity kits.
