Astronics Places Telefonix PDT Under New Connectivity Hardware Group

Astronics is consolidating Telefonix PDT and Astronics Armstrong Aerospace into a new group after it recently acquired both companies. The newly formed Astronics Connectivity Systems and Certification group will offer hardware, integration engineering, installation design and certification services to in-flight entertainment and connectivity providers. “This transition represents further commitment to offer our customers the most complete set of connectivity hardware, installation design and certification services available from a single supplier,” said Peter J. Gundermann, president and CEO of Astronics.

Delta and Bombardier Are Renegotiating C Series Deliveries

Delta Air Lines wants Bombardier to pledge that all 75 CS100s it ordered in April 2016 will be assembled in Mobile, Alabama, instead of Canada. Speaking at a US International Trade Commission hearing yesterday, Bombardier officials said its C Series negotiations with Delta are ongoing but could be finalized by January. The Atlanta-based carrier was originally supposed to begin taking CS100 deliveries next year, but is willing to wait longer to receive aircraft from the Mobile plant, once Bombardier’s agreement with Airbus is finalized.

Viasat Expands Presence in US and Europe

Viasat has officially opened new offices in Austin, Seattle and Amsterdam. The satellite connectivity provider said the Viasat Austin office will function as a hub for its growing DevOps teams, while the Seattle location will employ software engineers, developers and data scientists focused on cloud-based services. In Europe, the Amsterdam office will serve as a research and development center dedicated to developing Satellite Access Network subsystems, embedded cloud-based software and ground segment infrastructure for the ViaSat-3 satellite platform.

KLM Begins Airbus A330 Business-Class Retrofits

KLM has unveiled the first of its Airbus A330-200s to feature fully lie-flat business-class seats. The World Business Class product, which debuted in 2013, is already installed on the Dutch carrier’s Boeing 747s and 777s and came linefit on its 787 Dreamliners. KLM’s remaining four A330-300s will be retrofitted with the cabin by July 2018, followed by eight A330-200s by October next year. The seat converts into a 6.7-foot-long bed and includes an 18-inch HD display.

Travelers Can Navigate Heathrow Airport Terminals With Apple Maps

London’s Heathrow Airport has partnered with Apple to create detailed terminal maps for iOS devices. Using Apple Maps for iPhone and iPad, travelers can now navigate through Heathrow to shops, restaurants and other points of interest. “Bringing detailed terminal maps to Apple Maps marks a huge milestone in improving the digital experience at Heathrow,” said Stephen Glenfield, Heathrow’s senior digital manager.

Air Canada Integrates Virtual Reality, Social Media and Poutine for #CoolNotCold Campaign

Air Canada recently set up a pop-up Poutinerie in London’s Shoreditch district as part of a marketing campaign to inspire Brits to visit #CoolNotCold destinations this winter. Guests could “take off” on an Air Canada flight through a virtual reality onboard experience at the Poutinerie and enter an Instagram and Twitter competition to win Air Canada flights.

Hokkaido’s New Chitose Airport Hopes to Lure Chinese Spenders With WeChat Pay

New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, Japan, has become the world’s first WeChat Pay “flagship airport.” The airport’s domestic and international terminals are both connected to the WeChat payment system. The Chinese payment platform has also opened an “immersive smart shopping experience zone” in New Chitose Airport to provide Chinese travelers with a familiar payment experience upon arrival in Japan. An estimated 6.2 million visitors from China visited Hokkaido in 2017.
