Avianca Launches Wireless IFE App

Avianca has introduced a new wireless in-flight entertainment system on its fleet of Airbus A318 aircraft. Passengers can download the Avianca Entertainment app to their personal devices using the in-flight Wi-Fi connection to access films, TV shows, music and the flight map. The functionality is currently available on nine aircraft.

Norwegian to Introduce Enhanced Premium Cabin

Norwegian’s new Premium cabin will be fitted on the low-cost carrier’s final 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are set for delivery starting in February. The new cabin will have 60% more seats, with over a meter of legroom, and 11-inch Panasonic monitors providing complimentary in-flight entertainment. The airline plans to roll out in-flight Wi-Fi on its long-haul routes later this year.

Ryanair Breaks New Ground With Transfer Service

Ryanair has launched Ryanair Transfers, a new ground transfers booking platform, powered by CarTrawler. The service, which is available in 33 European countries, will enable customers to book a range of ground transport options, including taxi, chauffeur, bus, coach and rail services. “This product will guarantee [Ryanair customers] the lowest ground transport prices,” said Greg O’Gorman, director of Ancillary Revenue at Ryanair.

Southwest to Pay $15M to Settle Price Collusion Lawsuit

Southwest Airlines has become the first of four defendants accused of airfare collusion to agree to settle nationwide antitrust litigation by passengers. The defendants, American, Delta, United and Southwest, have all denied wrongdoing, but Southwest has agreed to pay $15 million to avoid the cost and distraction of further litigation. Since 2015, more than 100 private lawsuits have been filed claiming higher fares caused by reduced seating capacity, combined with low fuel prices and higher fees for checking bags, contributed to the airline industry posting record profits.

El Al Cancels Low-Cost Brand UP for New Economy Pricing Model

El Al’s low-cost brand UP will be terminated in the second quarter of this year in exchange for a new economy-class pricing structure on Europe-bound flights. Travelers will be able to choose from three packages – Lite, Classic and Flex. Each package will include at least one carry-on and a food and beverage service, with variations on checked baggage, and booking and seating reservation flexibility. A press release from the airline states the decision to cancel UP was made to optimize work processes and unify European destinations under a single product – the El Al brand.

Lufthansa Expands Digital Services for Its Lounges

Lufthansa has recently upgraded its LoungeNet platform with yoga relaxation exercises from the company TINT. Guests of Lufthansa airport lounges can watch videos to learn different yoga exercises that have been adapted for practicing in an airport lounge chair. Videos include exercises to address neck and back pain as well prevent jet lag. Additionally, in cooperation with Konica Minolta, Lufthansa has also expanded its free print and copy services to its airport lounges across Germany, and soon worldwide.
