Panasonic Avionics Unveils Third Generation Satellite Communications Network at CES

Panasonic Avionics introduced its third generation satellite communications network at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas yesterday. The network will offer bandwidth up to 20 times greater than previously available. A number of Panasonic’s airline partners, including United and Southwest, will begin installing the third generation system on aircraft during the first quarter of this year.

Airbus in Discussions With China Over A380 Production Partnership, Reports Bloomberg

Airbus is offering an industrial partnership with China on production of its A380s if the country’s airlines place orders for the superjumbo. Citing an anonymous source, Bloomberg said the European aerospace manufacturer is in early talks on permitting finishing and interiors work to be completed in China if it commits to a significant new order for A380s. An Airbus spokesperson declined to comment, saying the topic is “industry speculation.”

During the “Now Generation: New Attitudes Driving Success” session at CES yesterday, Kathy Sheehan, EVP of market research firm GfK, cited Air France’s Junior Lab project, as a "terrific example of a brand really embracing the Now Generation." The program brings members of Generation Z through a two-day creative thinking process about the future of air travel and passengers' changing needs; the best ideas are implemented by the carrier. APEX member Toca Boca is among the brands gaining footing with the Now Generation thanks to its commitment to gender neutrality, Sheehan explained – the studio exclusively creates games that can be enjoyed by both boys and girls.

BA’s Upcoming Short-Haul Aircraft to Come With Non-Reclining Seats

British Airways confirmed its upcoming fleet of 35 Airbus A320neos and A321neos will come linefit with non-reclining seats in economy class. Once they are delivered later this year, the aircraft will be used on the airline’s short-haul routes. “The new aircraft will have brand new seats set to a gentle recline to ensure everyone in the cabin enjoys a comfortable journey,” a BA spokesperson told the Daily Telegraph. “These changes will also allow us to offer more low fares to customers.”

Emirates and Etihad Form a Security Pact

Emirates and Etihad Airways signed a security and intelligence-sharing pact on Monday. Under the memorandum of understanding, Emirates Group Security will deliver security and training programs to Etihad Aviation Group and will also help improve its security escort capability. “Etihad Aviation Group and Emirates Group Security will build a stronger platform from which to share best practice and knowledge, allowing us to provide the safest traveling environment for our customers,” said Hamad Abdulla Al Shamsi, Etihad’s vice-chairman.

Routehappy Partners With Serko for Corporate Travel Booking Tool

Serko, an online corporate travel booking tool and expense management company, announced it is partnering with Routehappy to feature its content on its Zeno platform. New Zealand-based Serko will be the first corporate booking company to integrate Routehappy Hub Universal Attribute and Universal Ticket Attribute content into its online platform. “The key shift with this partnership is to merge the airline’s dot-com content into the business platform of the future,” said Darrin Grafton, Serko’s CEO.

"Smart Chair" With Dropdown IFE Visor Demonstrated by Lufthansa's FlyingLab

Three prototypes developed by teams of developers through Lufthansa and Deutsche Telekom’s “Telekom Fashion Fusion & Lufthansa FlyingLab” competition, were demonstrated and tested yesterday on board a Lufthansa Airbus A380 flight from Frankfurt to Houston. Among the prototypes is a “Smart Chair” project – a concept involving a curved dropdown visor capable of displaying in-flight entertainment and other information. Another, called “LYRA Connect,” involved a smartphone app designed to improve communication between passengers and cabin crew during a flight.
