CES 2018: Interactive Mobility’s Flymingo to Take Flight on Air France Next Month

APEX Media caught up with Interactive Mobility’s co-founder and CEO, Tanguy Morel, on Day One of CES, where the company confirmed that Air France would be the launch customer of its new wireless in-flight entertainment platform Flymingo. The service will be piloted next month on the French flag carrier’s Paris–Tel Aviv route, before being rolled out on other medium- and long-haul flights. Air Belgium has also placed an order for the service, with some 20 other airlines and airports considering making a similar move.

Thales to Equip AVANT IFE and Ka-band Connectivity on HNA Group’s Airlines

Thales will equip HNA Group’s subsidiary airlines with its AVANT in-flight entertainment system on 42 Airbus A330s and 17 A350s. HNA’s first AVANT-equipped A330 entered service in late 2017, and its first A350 with the new IFE hardware is expected to enter service in the second half of this year. HNA Group’s subsidiary airlines include Hainan Airlines, Capital Airlines, Tianjin Airlines, Lucky Air and West Air. A Thales spokesperson said Ka-band connectivity will be integrated into all the AVANT-equipped aircraft at a later date, but did not specify the satellite provider.

Eutelsat and China Unicom Sign In-Flight Connectivity MoU

Eutelsat Communications has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Unicom, catering to the fast-growing satellite communications market in Asia Pacific. The MoU will see the Eutelsat 172B satellite deliver in-flight connectivity coverage over an area stretching from the west coast of North America to Asia and as far south as Australia. The agreement is part of China’s “Belt and Road” initiative, which aims to boost the country’s trade and stimulate economic growth in Asia and beyond.

President Macron Says China Is Finalizing an Order for 184 Airbus A320s

French President Emmanuel Macron said China is finalizing orders for 184 Airbus A320-family aircraft. He also revealed that the French government has “ambitions” to secure deals for A350s and A380s in the coming weeks or months. If confirmed, the potential A320 order would be worth more than $18 billion at list prices. Airbus also signed a provisional deal today that will boost the number of A320 jets assembled at its Tianjin facility to six per month from four at present.

DXB Gets Its Own Time Out Magazine

Dubai Airports has partnered with ITP Media Group to launch Time Out DXB, a new media brand available to passengers at Dubai International Airport that will position DXB as a “city within a city.” Starting next month, the Time Out DXB app and monthly 88-page Time Out DXB magazine, will highlight the latest offers in food and retail outlets, in addition to experiences and leisure activities within the airport and the city of Dubai. “The development of Time Out DXB is another step toward redefining the way people experience our airport and the city we call home,” said Eugene Barry, EVP, Dubai Airports Commercial Group.

VIDEO: Lufthansa’s Latest FlyingLab Tech Prototypes on Display at CES 2018

The finalists of the Telekom Fashion Fusion & Lufthansa FlyingLab challenge were at CES yesterday to demonstrate their prototypes. Among the tech innovations were a smart chair that includes a privacy cocoon with integrated display, a blanket with three separate heating zones and a vibration alarm clock, slippers with sensors that allow passengers to play video games with their feet to reduce the risk of thrombosis and smart glasses that can be used by flight attendants to take passengers’ food and beverage orders.

Gategroup Signs 30-Year In-Flight Catering JV With Asiana Airlines

Gategroup and Asiana Airlines have signed a joint venture agreement, establishing a long-term partnership in South Korea. The JV establishes gategroup as the sole in-flight caterer for Asiana Airlines at Incheon Airport with a view to serving Asiana Airlines at other South Korean airports over the next 30 years. The airline catering company will hold a 60 percent controlling stake in the JV, which includes the development of a new facility at Incheon Airport.
