ANA to Merge Peach and Vanilla in Response to Increased Asian LCC Competition

All Nippon Airways announced today that it will merge its Peach Aviation and Vanilla Air subsidiaries by March 2020 after pledging to double income from its low-cost operations over the next five years. The unified airline, called Peach, will enter the medium-haul international market to compete against Asian LCCs such as HK Express and Scoot. “Competition is becoming increasingly fierce with the entry of overseas airlines and we thought now was the time to combine our strengths,” Vanilla Air president Katsuya Goto told reporters.

Emirates Could Have 1.3M Wi-Fi Users Per Month by End of Year

Emirates thinks it could have 1.3 million passengers connecting to its in-flight Wi-Fi per month by the end of this year. According to Patrick Brannelly, Emirates’ vice-president of Customer Experience, In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity, the airline recorded nearly one million users during the month of December 2017. “What is extraordinary is the month-on-month growth of more than 5%. The take-up rate is growing dramatically. We were at 780,000 just a few months ago; now, it is 950,000,” he said.

Huawei Becomes a Strategic Partner of IATA

Huawei has joined IATA’s Strategic Partnerships Program, with a view to using its technology expertise to help boost digital transformation among airlines and airports. Announced at the Passenger Terminal EXPO 2018 in Stockholm, the Chinese multinational technology company said it will help customers build smart airports and help airlines with digital transformation efforts. “With global airports and airlines evolving toward smart airports and smart airlines, Huawei is committed to becoming the best partner for aviation digital transformation,” said Yuan Xilin, president of Huawei’s Transportation Sector.

Xiamen Airlines Orders 30 Boeing 737s

Xiamen Airlines has firmed an order for 30 Boeing 737 family aircraft, including 20 737 MAX 8s and 10 737 MAX 10s, worth $3.24 billion at list prices. The China Southern Airlines subsidiary will take delivery of the aircraft starting in 2019, through to 2022. The all-Boeing carrier said the new generation 737s will improve its operating efficiency, in addition to expanding capacity.

Getting to the Crux of Passenger Mood

Digital interactions are creating a shift in what drives happiness, and brands – including airlines and airports – need to keep up, said experts at this week's Passenger Terminal EXPO. “Information overload [is] leading to 300 million depressed people in the world now," said Jan Richards, head of Insights and Planning at Dublin Airport Authority. "We have to be careful not to overload customers." Dr. Vedran Dzebic, research and development coordinator of Entro Communications, developed an algorithm that can help objectively predict a passenger’s reaction to a particular environment.

Qatar Airways and Iberia Grow Their Codeshare Agreement

Qatar Airways and Iberia announced they are expanding their codeshare agreement, which will now include destinations in Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Panama and the Dominican Republic. “Expanding the codeshare partnership with Iberia was a natural progression based on our customers’ mutual desire for additional destinations across both networks,” said Qatar Airways Group CEO Akbar Al Baker, adding that “Latin America is a key area of growth for us.” Both airlines said that members of their respective frequent flyer programs will benefit from “increased accessibility to Qatar Airways’ hub, Hamad International Airport, and Iberia’s hub at Madrid-Barajas Airport Terminal 4.”

British Airways Will Bring Improved Bedding and Amenities to Australia Routes

British Airways will introduce bedding and amenity kits from The White Company in its Club World business-class cabin on routes between London’s Heathrow Airport and Australia, starting this fall. The amenity kits feature products from The White Company, including scented toiletries and a jersey eye mask, while the bedding consists of a pillow, a woven blanket with satin trim, a duvet and a padded mattress cover.
