Boeing Hit by WannaCry Virus, But Says Attack Caused Minimal Damage

Boeing said it was hit by a cyberattack on Wednesday, identified as the WannaCry computer virus that infected thousands of computer systems in more than 70 countries last year. An internal memo sent by Mike VanderWel, chief engineer of Production Engineering at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said the attack was “metastasizing” and called for “all hands on deck.” Company executives later offered assurances that the attack had been quelled with minimal damage. “The vulnerability was limited to a few machines … There was no interruption to the 777 jet program or any of our programs,” said Linda Mills, head of Communications for Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

South Korean Regulators Approve Delta-Korean Air JV

South Korean regulators have approved a transpacific joint venture between Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. The Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s approval follows a similar decision by the US Department of Transportation in November 2017. The consent is subject to certain conditions: Both carriers will be required to maintain their present capacity on routes between the US and South Korea and will be subject to review after three years. “Our expanded partnership means a host of new destinations and travel options across Asia and North America,” said Ed Bastian, Delta Air Lines’ CEO.

Government to Sell 76% Stake in Air India

India’s government has decided to sell a 76% stake in Air India, bundled with two-thirds of the carrier’s $7.8-billion debt. Under the plan, the carrier would remain 24% state-owned, but Jayant Sinha, India’s Minister of State for Civil Aviation, said the new owners would be free of any government interference and have until May 14 to submit a bid. “The winning bidder is going to have full management control and will be able to operate the company in the way that will maximize revenues, profitability and value creation,” Sinha told CNBC India.

The growing popularity of low-cost carriers has seen legacy airlines turn to higher-density cabins to maximize load.
