Eutelsat Buys a Half-Terabit Satellite From Thales Alenia Space

Eutelsat has ordered a next-generation very high-throughput satellite (VHTS) to support the growth of its European fixed broadband and in-flight connectivity businesses. Scheduled for service entry in 2021, KONNECT VHTS will be built by Thales Alenia Space and will offer 500 gigabits per second of Ka-band connectivity with coverage over Europe. Eutelsat also confirmed that its purchase of the new satellite will replace a joint investment with Viasat on a ViaSat-3 satellite for Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

PXCom to Add Augmented Reality to Latécoère’s IFE External Video Stream

Latécoère has selected PXCom to enrich its live in-flight video feed, made possible by cameras affixed to the fuselage of the aircraft, with descriptions and images of points of interest superimposed on the video stream in real time. According to PXCom CEO Cyril Jean, the integration, which will be on display at AIX next week, should launch in the first quarter of next year. PXCom will also unveil its interactive meals menu at the event – the launch customer will be announced by July.

BA Signs With ZEE for Indian IFE Content

British Airways has selected ZEE Entertainment Enterprises, an Indian mass media company, to supply regional onboard programming for its flights to and from India. Global Content Hub By Zee, the company’s content syndication arm will include shows from its television channels including Zee TV, Zee Café, Z Living, &TV, Living Foodz and Zee News. “We are constantly on the lookout for programming that caters to the varied tastes and preferences of our customers, including regional content,” said Robert Williams, BA’s head of Sales, Asia Pacific and the Middle East. "Our introduction of Global Content Hub By Zee programming is a big step in this direction.”

IndiGo Gives Up on Acquiring Air India

IndiGo has pulled out of the race to acquire a majority stake in Air India, citing the large resources required to turn around the debt-laden state-owned carrier. Aditya Ghosh, IndiGo's president, said his airline had focused on solely acquiring Air India’s international operations and Air India Express, its low-cost subsidiary. “As we have communicated before, we do not believe that we have the capability to take on the task of acquiring and successfully [turning] around all of Air India's airline operation,” said Ghosh.

New Passenger Technology Solutions Event Aims to Encourage Big-Picture Thinking

A new event showcasing the technologies and innovations designed to optimize the interconnectivity of passengers’ end-to-end journey will be taking place during Passenger Experience Week in Hamburg next week, alongside the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX), World Travel and Catering Expo (WTCE) and Passenger Experience Conference (PEC). Passenger Technology Solutions will feature education sessions by speakers from Norwegian, Boeing, Airbus and JetBlue; Black Swan Data, airfree and Guestlogix will be among the exhibitors. APEX Media caught up with Archana Sharma, exhibition director, Passenger Technology Solutions, to get a sneak peek of the inaugural PTS.

SkyTeam Adds Interactive Airport Maps to Its Mobile App

SkyTeam has launched a collection of interactive airport maps to help customers more easily navigate terminal buildings using iOS and Android mobile devices. The maps are available on the SkyTeam app for all the of the alliance’s 39 main hubs. Member airlines can also integrate the map technology into their own mobile apps. “Reaching for our phone to find the way is now second-nature and our interactive airport maps will help ensure a more seamless and relaxed trip through the terminal,” said Perry Cantarutti, SkyTeam’s CEO.

[PHOTOS] Amsterdam Schiphol Unveils CGI Images of New Pier

Amsterdam Schiphol airport has unveiled rendered images of its new pier, which is scheduled to open by the end of next year. The facility will include five gates for narrow-body aircraft and three for wide-bodies. The expanded space will measure 590,000 square feet and will boost Schiphol’s eco-friendly credentials with design elements including the installation of solar panels and the recycling of rain to flush toilets. The pier is part of a wider expansion project, which includes the construction of a new terminal building by 2023 to increase capacity by 14 million passengers.
