The 12th annual Crystal Cabin Award ceremony kicked off yesterday evening with a keynote from Fred Finn (the Guinness World Record titleholder for the most air miles flown by a passenger, and who was also featured in the first episode of APEX Insider). APEX CEO Joe Leader was on the judging panel and presented the IFEC award. For the first time, the trophies were 3-D printed. Click through for the full list of winners.

Alaska Airlines Upgrades to STG Aerospace’s saf-Tglo Floor-Path Lighting

STG Aerospace today announced Alaska Airlines will install its saf-Tglo SSUL photoluminescent emergency floor-path marking system on 116 aircraft. The system will be retrofit on the US carrier's Boeing 737s and 737 MAX 9s, and Airbus A320s starting in late 2018. Yesterday, STG Aerospace announced that its liTeMood LED lighting system is now available for retrofit on Airbus A320s, A330s and A340s and unveiled the first two launch customers for Airbus aircraft.

Geven Continues AIX Selling Spree With Lufthansa Group Deal

Lufthansa Group has selected Geven's new ESSENZA economy-class seat for Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft entering into service on Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS International fleets for short- and medium-haul routes. The seats offer 29 inches of pitch, a slimmed backrest and increased knee clearance. Deliveries will start in Q1 of 2019 with SWISS, and by 2022, the seats will be on board 93 aircraft throughout the group.

Vanema Springs Into Action With Seats for Economy, Business and First Class

Vanema unveiled seating for economy, business and first class featuring its proprietary Octaspring technology, at Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg. According to Ieva Baradouska, the company's head of Marketing and Communications, Vanema has undertaken all necessary testing and expects its cushions to begin flying by the end of this year.

SkyLights Prepares to Debut Allosky Headset in Flight on Joon

SkyLights announced it has obtained DO-160 avionics certification for its new Allosky headset and that it has developed a passenger announcement integration system as part of the headset. SkyLights CEO David Dicko told APEX Media the headset will launch on Air France subsidiary Joon before the end of April. He also revealed that the company will soft launch a consumer headset before the end of 2018. “We want to be able to offer the same kind of full service to consumers, whereby they can have access to their own content and to content that we’ve created for them,” he said. “We’re looking for two [thousand] to five thousand consumers to test it out for a year as part of a soft launch.”

Inside Rockwell Collins’ AIX Booth: Lights, Seats, Action!

In addition to showcasing its Meridian single-aisle, Aspire twin-aisle and Air Rest business-class seats, Rockwell Collins, which completed the acquisition of B/E Aerospace in April last year, showed a slew of innovations at its booth, including a micro LED lighting system, entryway pop-up social area, hot-and-cold food and beverage display, and a cabin-class divider – the last of which won a Crystal Cabin Award last night.

Airlines Should Share Data With Third Parties to Generate Revenue, PTS Panelists Say

Artificial intelligence has many possible applications across the airline industry, as proven by a session called “Big Data, AI, Machine Learning and Automation – the new engines for travel innovation,” part of the Passenger Technology Solutions conference at AIX. Despite moderator and APEX contributor Marisa Garcia mentioning the recent scrutiny regarding how Facebook uses personal data and the care that needs to be taken so passengers don’t “feel like they are the product,” panelists agreed that sharing data is a great way to drive revenue – provided it is done securely.
