American Airlines Secures Exclusive Rights to Air Austin City Limits Concert Series in Flight

Spafax announced today that it has negotiated for KLRU-TV’s PBS concert series Austin City Limits to be exclusively available on American Airlines until 2019, when it will become available to the wider in-flight market. Passengers can choose from eight episodes each month, featuring a variety of artists, including Roy Orbinson, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Radiohead and Foo Fighters.

Jamco’s Venture Business-Class Seat Will Launch With KLM

Jamco announced KLM as the launch customer for its Venture business-class seat. The Dutch flag carrier has ordered the model for eight Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners that it will begin receiving in June 2019. Jamco worked with Boeing and Teague to make sure the lie-flat seat's high-density herringbone design and 1-2-1 configuration complements the Boeing Sky Interior on the 787.

Air Italy Unveils Livery on Its First Boeing 737 MAX 8

Air Italy has unveiled its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 featuring the rebranded carrier’s new livery. The Air Italy name was previously used by a subsidiary of Meridiana but will now be used for the group as a whole and features the same shade of burgundy used in Qatar Airways’ branding. Air Italy plans to increase its fleet to around 50 aircraft in the next few years by leasing 737 MAX 8s, 787s and Airbus A330s from Qatar Airways, which owns a 49% stake in the carrier.

WOW air Launches Premium Fare Option

WOW air has introduced a new premium fare aimed at business travelers. The low-cost carrier replaced its WOW Biz bundle with WOW Premium, guaranteeing seats with at least 37 inches of pitch (its “BigSeat”) compared to the former 32 inches. The new fare also includes priority boarding, fast-track security and in-flight meals and beverages. WOW air is currently in the process of retrofitting its fleet of 20 Airbus A320s, A321s and its sole A330 with the BigSeat.

Cathay Pacific to Sell Tickets Directly via Skyscanner

Cathay Pacific and its Cathay Dragon regional subsidiary have joined Skyscanner’s direct booking platform. The integration means that Cathay Pacific is the first Hong Kong-based airline to sell tickets directly within Skyscanner across 40 markets, including Australia, Canada, Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States and Taiwan. “As a traveler-focused business we want to offer our users the unique opportunity to book through our partner branded funnel whilst still having access to Cathay’s unique offerings and ancillaries,” said Hugh Aitken, senior director of Strategic Partnerships at Skyscanner.

EU to Launch Probe Into Legality of State Aid for Alitalia

The European Commission said it will launch a probe into whether €900 million in bridging loans to Alitalia from Italy’s government were illegal under the EU’s state aid rules. The Italian flag carrier filed for bankruptcy on May 2, 2017, and was later provided with two loans from the government – €600 million in May and a further €300 million in October. The EC announced today that it will investigate concerns that the loans were not paid within six months and may have been larger that required.
