Strings Attached: European Commission Approves UTC’s Rockwell Collins Acquisition

The European Commission has approved United Technologies Corporation’s (UTC) acquisition of Rockwell Collins on the condition it divests its businesses in actuators, pilot controls, ice protection and oxygen systems. The announcement, which was widely expected, removes one of the final hurdles for the US aerospace companies to clear before completing their $30-billion tie-up. “We can allow this merger to go ahead because in all the markets where we raised concerns, UTC has committed to divest activities covering the entire overlap between the two companies,” said Margrethe Vestager, European Commissioner for Competition.

Recaro Proposes Seats That Clean Themselves (and Tell Pax About It!)

Recaro Aircraft Seating says it is developing a seat infused with a disinfectant that “destroys almost every germ on contact within seconds.” The business-class seats, which according to CEO Mark Hiller may debut within a year or two, will also communicate their level of cleanliness to incoming passengers. “The best innovation doesn’t help if you cannot show it,” Hiller said in an interview with Bloomberg. The seats will also give massages, predict backaches and offer increased temperature and noise control for passengers.

Finnair has introduced a new Korean menu for business-class passengers on flights from Seoul to Helsinki. As part of its Signature Chef Series, the carrier enlisted the help of Korean chef Sung-Yeol Nam, who says he took inspiration from “ingredients and the food I grew up with.” Offerings will rotate, with the first selection – including an appetizer of beef rolls with young greens and a main course of sea bass “Jeon” served with grilled spring onion and Romanesco sauce – available until July. The menu coincides with the 10-year anniversary of Finnair’s route to Seoul.
