American Airlines to End Carry-On Ban for Basic Economy

As of September 5, American Airlines customers with basic economy tickets will be allowed to travel with a carry-on bag, free of charge, in addition to a personal item that fits under the seat. Current rules require travelers who fall under this fare category to pay a fee to check carry-on luggage. American Airlines CEO Doug Parker cited Google Flights’ search functionality as one of the reasons for the change: "There are now filters … that ask you if you want to bring a carry-on, and if you say yes, the American flights don’t show up nearly as high as they did before.”
