Ryanair Cancels More Than 400 Flights After Pilot Walkout

Ryanair pilots are striking in five European countries, forcing the cancellation of more than 400 flights and stranding about 50,000 passengers. The 24-hour walkout involves staff in Germany, Sweden, Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands, who are striking over pay and work conditions. Ryanair says it has made every effort to resolve the dispute. The Irish low-cost carrier said 85% of its scheduled flights will operate as normal on Saturday and that most of its customers who have been affected by the walkout have been given seats on alternative Ryanair flights.

Etihad Is Open to Joining Star Alliance

Etihad Airways is open to joining Star Alliance as part of an effort to reinvent its business model to include new alliances and codeshare partnerships, according to Australian Business Traveller. Etihad launched its own partner alliance scheme in 2014 comprising seven airlines of which three – Etihad Regional, airberlin and Niki – are defunct, while Alitalia continues to operate after filing for bankruptcy in 2017. “In the past, the Etihad Group was identified as being an alliance itself and, consequently, under the rules of Star Alliance, its members were not allowed to engage in collaboration with us on codeshares,” Etihad Aviation Group CEO Tony Douglas said.
